As pointed out by horsth in other thread:

According to http://pen-and-tell.blogspot.de/ don't update. fw has some bugs!

malfunctions:

- Focus Stacking

I just tried the focus stacking with the 300mm f4 and the camera locked up with corrupted images.

Now I am glad I decided to wait until I got the new E-M1 MkII before updating my current E-M1.  Thanks for the alert.

So, a trusting soul, earlier today I installed the new firmware Ver 4.2 on my Olympus EM-1. Bad move. Focus stack with the 12-40mm Pro lens is flaky. Sometimes I get errors (focus stacking failed or some such message - it's gone quickly) and sometimes no errors. I've used focus stacking with this lens a fair amount (>100 shots) and never had a stacking error before.

So, until there is another update, I suggest people do not update their EM-1s to the new FW.

My em-1 ibis become not that  effective after the new update, I hope it just my problem. I can use 1/2 or 1 second shutter speed with clean image on 12MM before the update …Now… I almost 100% blurry shot with same setting…

I have updated mine (took 7 minutes to download) & tried Focus Stacking with the 40-150 Pro lens (with MC14 TC) & it performed fine being hand held (with obvious movement) giving a suitable combined image. I know that lens was already able to do it though. Also, the Keystone Comp works fine too.

Backing out E-M1 4.2 firmware

I posted this in the other thread, but if you wish to back out the 4.2 firmware to 4.1, you might be able to use this site to restore the 4.1 firmware.  Note, I have not used this site, and I'm not associated with the people who run the site:

Hmmm, interesting. I just tried the 12-40mm and had the same malfunction.

Here how the corrupted files look like.

Camera froze, could not turn off with switch, had to eject the battery and reinsert to make camera work again.

Seem to work fine unless I use focus stacking.

So what is the procedure when this happens, will olympus be aware of the problem with the update and how will it be fixed?

If Olympus fixes it, it will be a new update that replaces this update.

IIRC, the E-M5 had an issue with version 1.2 of the firmware.  Olympus then issued the 1.3 firmware to back out the 'features' of 1.2, and then issued the 1.4 firmware to provide the 1.2 features in a fixed fashion: E-M5 mark I firmware

Report this problem to Olympus
2

I suggest every USA EM-1 owner report this problem to Olympus. I have. It's not obvious who to contact so I am treating this like a repair problem. From this page, I clicked on "contact us" and under "email us" I clicked on "repair questions". Filled out the form and sent it off.

I asked for 2 things: a) when will there be a fix and b) how can I roll back to FW 4.1. I'm sure the answer to a) will be "we are looking into it" and to b) "you can't". But at least it gets this on their radar screen. Hopefully, they will yank the broken code off the website.

If you have time tomorrow, you could also call their support number 1-888-553-4448 and complain. It can't hurt.

Re: BEWARE: BUGS in NEW FIRMWARE 4.2 for E-M1

I confess I usually wait a few days when they come out, just in case! sorry, and thanks, to early down loaders.

On Olympus' downloads page, there is now no 4.2 firmware download, so it seems they are very aware of the issues.

Workaround: Set RecView to Auto or 0.5s
1

Check your image review settings (Setup menu: RecView) and try 0.5s or Auto.

According to Reinhard Wagner from the German Oly forum, the bugs occur if RecView (display of the image right after the shot) is disabled.

Glad i read about the bug before installing the update. I'll wait for FW4.3 although i'd love to try stacking with the fish.

I am certain Olympus knows exactly who and which camera's has made theire updates .

A few Olympus employe's are going to have a tough time

They will be hanging over theire computers for the next few nights ........

Lets hope they will fix it soon ......its not a Pro Camera for nothing

I've tried H-H Starlight, Keystone & Focus bracketing with the 40-150 Pro lens without issue (with FW 4.2), but I do have Record Review enabled though, to 0.5 second.

Same here: enabling RecView (2 seconds) apparently fixes the problem: focus stacking and HDR (HDR1 in my case) work properly, and the camera does not lock itself dead. . .

Hopefully, FW 4.3 will be available soon

Hopefully they won't need to do a reversing one first with a second step update (like FW 1.2 for the E-M5)
