Should I sell Panasonic 14 2.5 for Panasonic 12-32

Hi

I have a Panasonic 14 2.5, Panasonic 20 1.7, Olympus 45 1.8 and am hoping to get the Olympus 14-150 shortly. I was thinking of selling the 14 to get more of a wide angle lens and more flexibility which I thought the 12-32 would offer. I see it has good reviews.

Do people think this would be a good move?

Thanks

If it were me the answer would be a firm no.

I have the 20/1.7 and the 45/1.8, together with the 12-32. I took a statistical study of the shots from the 12-32 and found they were nearly 100% shot below 14mm. In effect, that lens is serving as a 12mm prime.

You've approximately already got that prime. So stay put, unless you also want to get rid of the 20/1.7.

The 12-32 cannot match the primes for IQ, and exhibit so much barrel distortion at 12mm, even after default profile corrections, that correcting to rectilinear loses a couple of mm of view so it's really quite close to 14mm at the wide end if you want straight lines to be straight near the edges.

I can understand the rave reviews. It's a typical very competent kit zoom that's also small, light and easy to operate. But if you are familiar with the quality offered by the primes this is a step down. You cannot have tiny, light, good zoom range and prime quality. Something has to be traded.

How often do you use the 14 wide open? At f/2.5 it's not a real fast lens but it is about 1.3 stops faster than the 12-32 at that focal length. In terms of IQ I'd say the 12-32 is as good. I've really been impressed with the IQ from that lens. It doesn't have a manual focus ring, if that matters. And in use the 14 is even smaller, since the 12-32 extends. I really like the 12-32.

how often will you use the longer end of 14-150?

I would buy oly 12-40 or pany 12-35 for less than the price of 12-32 + 14-150

I won't do it.

I have both of the lenses. 14 f/2.5 was basically a free copy when I upgraded to GX1, but due to its a non OIS lens and when using on non IBIS bodies, basically I could shoot with 14-45 at much slower shutter speed under low lighting and so it was idle most of the time until bought GX7 and even be more useful on GX85.

I also once very excited to have 12-32 (a kit lens came with GX85). Under good lighting condition it is very sharp, and is comparable to 14-45 having benefit of tiny size and 12mm wider coverage. Having high hope to have it as a go everywhere standard zoom, I was sad to see poor result under poor lighting condition. If coincidentally there would be small fine detail objects (grass/leaves etc) at the edge in shadow, water color like poor resolved image would be produced. I needed to recall 14-45 again and eventually upgrade to the 12-35 f/2.8...

According to my experience on the few consumer grade zoom (f/3.5) lenses of Panny, I would day 14-140 M2 be the best all round player, coming after closely by 14-45 and having 12-32 and 45-150 in similar quality after the pack. But if you would shoot mostly under good lighting, and would compose carefully, it would still be an excellent lens well beyond its low cost.

14 f/2.5 is faster (on IBIS body), having AF speed/size/weight similar to 12-32. It is a prime lens, not as versatile as the 12-32 zoom, but could be handled easier and would produce more consistent quality pictures under good or low lighting environment.

According to members' opinion, 14-42 M2 (Panny) might be the best kit zoom currently (I can't verify this). If size and weight wouldn't be an issue, might worth to check it out.

Well, I had exactly the same lenses, but additional bought the Oly 9-18mm. No overlapping with the 20mm and more wideangle and better use of a polfilter... The 12-32 now seats permanenly on a PL6; the combination is small and good enough to carry it always.

I wouldn't do it, in fact I just sold my 12-32 yesterday.  In daylight the performance was pretty good, it's not very usable once the sun goes down.  Opening it gets a bit annoying and there is no MF ring.

Re: Should I sell Panasonic 14 2.5 for Panasonic 12-32

Hmmm, this has definitely made me think again. I suppose I just fancied the slightly wider angle and more flexibility.

Perhaps I should save my money for the 14-150. I would like that one as it's weatherproof and means I can take just one lens on longer walks when there is the possibility of seeing wildlife.

Thanks for your advice.

14-150 would make sense. If for newer Pany cameras like GX8, GX85 or G85 etc, 14-140 M2 be a better choice for the Dual IS.

The jpg/built in raw lens corrections end up with a 12mm FOV. If you shoot raw and use DXO then you can achieve improved performance and a wider FOV.

Re: Should I sell Panasonic 14 2.5 for Panasonic 12-32

Hi,

This probably is a bit obvious but it depends if you get a good copy of the lenses.  My copy of the 14 3.5 is decentred so it is fairly soft/distorted in the left of the frame and my 12-32 is definitely sharper.  That said, my wife's copy of the 12-32 is slightly soft in the right of the frame, although still better than my copy of the 14 3.5.

I might try shimming the 14 3.5 to see if that will fix it.  I seldom use but it would go well with my GM1 to make a really small combo.  (My 12-32 tends to live on my E-M10.)

I purchased the 12-32 for a cheap 12 mm to use with my 20 and 45 and my GX7.  It fit the bill for a while, knowing that I would use it as my $150 12mm prime...could not justify the Oly 12/2.  Shortly afterwards we decided to go on trip to Germany.  I purchased a 12-35 2.8 and never looked back.  It is permanently on the camera now, with the 20/1.7 as the low light prime.  I hardly ever use the 45 now, and rarely use the 12-32, except in good light, on the GM1 when small and light is mandatory...and the GX7 is too big.

Hi

Have been looking at the 12-35 too. It's something I will definitely think about in the future but will get the telephoto lens sorted first.

Thanks

Interesting read.

So, sell your 14mm for 12-32mm? That depends.........

  • What camera are you shooting with?
  • What budget do you have?
  • What kind of photos do you typically take? Or looking to take.

Post a couple of your typical pics here. That way peeps can give you an answer that will suit your particular needs.

Good luck on your journey to lens Nirvana.

Re: Should I sell Panasonic 14 2.5 for Panasonic 12-32. That depends.

Hi

My camera will be an EM5 mark 2 - I sold an EM10 to make way for this. In the end I have decided to stick with the 14 2.5 with the idea of switching to the 12-35 at some point on the future.

Thanks

Although I have the 9-18 and 12-35, I've kept the 14 + GWC1 for use with my EP5. It's a great little lens and the GWC1 gives you 11mm for a real wideangle view while the 14mm @ 28mm is a "normal" lens for me.

The 14 is a relatively slow prime anyway.  I have the 12-32, it's a great little lens.  That is EQ to 24 on FF,,. I find I use it often at 12, there is a big dif between 12 and 14.

you can get both for a low price so get both

I have both and they are not too expensive .

one being a zoom has a difference purpose than my prime for me.
