$1999 for an M6

Lenses First

The current EF-M lens system is fine for what it is. Doesn't seem to me like a good match for a $2000 super rugged hyper performance body, though.

Yep. That's the main thing. Olympus, Fuji & Sony can sell $2000+ weather sealed mirrorless bodies because they have native lenses to match. I don't think the EF/EF-M adapter is weathersealed so there would be no point in Canon releasing that level of body unless they release some lenses on the level of the Olympus 12-40 or 12-100. The EF-M lenses are probably optically just as good but they're just slow (in the case of the zooms) and not built for that market. But from the samples released so far the M5 will outclass the EM1-II for image quality, at half the price.

The main point I take from the recently posted Olympus Iceland samples is why bother with weather sealing when water on a lens ruins pictures anyway.

Personally, I'd be more compelled by the EOS M5 at $799-$849.  I'm not anywhere near being in the market for a $2000 camera.

That would be like a mini 7D2+ (more buffer, more AF points and better video ) squashed down into a rebel weight mirrorless camera. A pocket rocket for sure. Note, the E-M1 mkII shoots 10fps CAF mechanically. The faster bursts are for e-shutter which may have limitations.

I'm just thinking right now, if my 7D1 blew up, would I spend 2K USD for such a 7D2+? I find I shrug and say no, the 80D is quite impressive. Based on that, I doubt I would be willing to pay that much for such a M6 regardless the upspec.

Now, this is much better frame of reference for me: a mini 7d2-like, super-AF'ing MILC. As even a top-notch, uber-hyper m43 is still burdened for me by its primordial sin of having a tiny, compromised sensor.

So at least an APS-C is simply a must, but with some caveats:

  • pocket rocket indeed, so please NOT with an unnecessarily bulging, a fake pentaprism;
  • AF'ing really would need to be at least on the 7d2 level, esp. for fast action shooting and tracking in high-fps, continuous mode;
  • zero-lag, at least 120fps, high-res EVF;
  • fully compatible with EF/EF-S lenses, with no penalty on their speed of AF and accuracy;
  • and finally either NO-VIDEO at all;
  • or if they really need to piggy back a video parasite on such splendid still cam,
  • then there should be an user-selectable option to disable ALL vid's oriented options in one menu stroke;
  • so... all the vid's positions on the mode dial should automatically turn into placeholders of additional (Cx, Cy, Cz) user's settings;
  • all the vid's buttons will be freed and became user-programmable, etc.

If such a beast will be designed and offered by Canon, then yes - I'll consider a miniaturization price premium over the 7d2'd MSRP

Oh, perhaps not

the a6500 seems to have a lot in common with such a "pocket rocket" cam;

however, somehow I'm not too sure it will be at the 7d2 fast, dynamic action AF'ing record breaker level yet (maybe the next gen APS-C from Sony, or even one beyond that ??);

still about a month to go before some real hands-on from not too lenient sources start to appear on both the M5 and a6500.

And above all of course also on the nano-USM 70-300 Canon's last generation portable walk around zoom - am truly curious how well/poor it will weld together stringent fast action shooting requirements, with rather relaxed and optimized not for action but rather smooth and slow-transitions video use??
