Canon 450D & Tamron 18-200 Err-01 message

Hi,

I have a 450D body with tamron 18-200 lens. I'm getting the err 01 message.

Here's what I have tried/noticed:

*cleaned lens contacts

*error occurs at 18mm at both f3.5 & F22

*error occurs when zoomed out

*error does not occur at the 30mm to 80mm range at any aperture

*occasionally after taking the lens off and putting it back on it will work at the zoomed end or the wide end. But not both. But will revert back to the above.

*camera has still taken the photo at the selected aperture when error occurs

*Aperture diagram/ iris seems to be working - when holding down depth preview button and turning the dial in Av mode the iris opens/closes. Appears camera and lens are communicating.

*autofocus works

*when attaching lens there is a buzzing sound as the lens locks into place

Does anyone have any thoughts? Thanks

Sounds like a faulty ribbon cable within the lens.  The the cable folds and straightens with zoom in and out.  One or more of the wires within it will break.  It'll make connection and work sometimes at some zoom positions and fail at others.
