5D faulty - what next?

My KM 5D, after 11 years and roughly 13,500 shots, is now only giving me a black photo on each shot. I've tried different lenses, new battery but still the same result. It's had for many years the first-frame-black issue, but I have always lived with that.

I have the following lenses:

AF DT 18-70

AF DT 11-18

Sigma DF EX 28-70 (F2.8)

Sigma 70-300 APO Macro

One of the reasons I picked the 5D back in 2005 was the sensor image stabiliser. Do I now buy a Sony and keep my lenses?

I've probably answered my own question as my budget is limited - so a body-only Sony, something like the A58?

Would love to hear feedback from others that have been in the same situation and what they have done.

Thanks everyone.

That's a pretty small number....

Unless you want to spend a whole lot more, yes.

An A58 sounds like an excellent fit. Alternatively, you could go for an older used Sony A body. A "like new" A100 is as close as you can get to your 5D in handling and costs about $150. However, the newer models are better. I'd skip the ones like the A350 that are DSLRs with a little camera in the OVF for live view (I own an A350), but an A55 or newer is really excellent and a clean used one is under $300.

Personally, I transitioned (mostly) away from A mount to E to use mostly manual focus lenses. However, nearly all my AF lenses are A mounts used via LA-EA1/2/3/4 adapters, and I'm very happy with the IQ, focus speed, and especially the cost of A-mount lenses. Of course, the low cost and high availability of used A-mount lenses works against you in that, if you were to sell your current lenses, you wouldn't get as much as their quality would justify.

If you wanted to transition to E, you could, but an LA-EA1/2 + A6500 or LA-EA3/4 + A7II would be the ante, and you could buy 2-4 A58 for the same money. Something like an A6000 or A7 would be cheaper, but you'll miss IBIS....

If you buy a Sony you won't have any better luck getting it fix than a 7D. The 7D or a A700 (says Sony but it's 100% Minolta) or a A900 A850 both 100% Minolta.

good luck

This happened to me two years ago - my beloved 5D stopped working.

I bought a Sony A58, because I had five minolta AF lenses. After some use, I realised that my thirty year old lenses were not up to the 20 megapixel resolution of this modern camera. I ended up selling my 18-70, 28-80, 70-210, and 28-200 Tamron and buying newer lenses.

The Sony A58 has the better live view implementation and focusing than the Canon and Nikon SLRs, but if I had known that I would have to replace the lenses as well as the camera, I might have decided differently.
Cheers!
