Trying to learn HDR with the Panasonic G7 and Nocticron

I have been using lightroom to try HDR. Any tips from HDR pros out there would be greatly appreciated

That's not a good start. I'm not sure what's happening with the processing but it's gone horribly wrong.

Everything has a  cartoonish look... the transition of highlights and colour off the bonnet are painful to my eyes.

In my opinion HDR is used to compensate for our cameras inability to accurately see what our eyes do... in terms of DR.

This picture has no need for HDR. I'm certainly the type that avoids HDR as a look... more one that try's to capture reality. You've pushed this way too much...

I like it.  I don't think there are rights and wrong in HDR.  So many possibilities and so many subjective views.  My only thought on HDR is don't let it take over your life, just treat it as a bit of occasional fun.

I don't see anything wrong with your shot but there was no real need to use HDR in those conditions.  At least you are trying different things and that is the best way to learn.  Keep on shooting and you will figure out what you like.

Personally, I have never "mastered" HDR.  I doubt that I ever will.  I'm still trying to figure out black and white.  (I've only been taking pictures for 50 years.)

This actually may be a prime candidate for multi-exposure merge, if the wind was not moving the leaves too much.

The reasons are that the highlights around the headlight and the plethora of curved reflective surfaces including both glass and metal demand very low exposures to contain all the subtle transitions, and you could lose anything in the darker areas of the frame if you try to get all of that in a single, very dark, exposure.

The problem people find with this particular treatment is in the tone mapping after the merge which threw away the highlight areas anyway removing the prime motivation for multiple exposures in the first place. And they are right in saying that if you wanted this look to begin with, you probably did not need to take multiple exposures to merge. For instance, the free Nik HDR software can likely get you this from one of the exposures in the series.

I like it as a start...has a cool, urban look. I would suggest you try the trial version of Photomatix...also get a copy of HDR Efex 2 (for free)....it was part of the Nik Software Plug-ins Bundle that is now free from Google.

Also check out Trey Ratcliff's HDR Tutorials .
