Lenses are getting bigger as the resolution increases.

Especially, thinking of 35mm lenses, they seem to be getting bigger. It is probably because the resolution of the image sensor is increasing. The new 35mm 2.0 IS USM is bigger than the old 35mm 2.0 and 35mm 1.4 L II is bigger than its old version.

However, there must be those who do not need high resolution but want a shallow depth of field and fast aperture. I am definitely among them, being satisfied with only 4 M pixels for the most cases. Therefore, I am always longing for fast but small lenses.

Leica's lenses, such as Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH, look small and good.

Leica M + Summilux-M 35mm 1/4 vs EOS 5D4 + 35mm 1.4 L II

Is there anyone who could compare Leica's 35mm lenses and Canon's?

It's a lot more than just resolution.

Canon lenses are made to work with a DSLR and have to sit further from the sensor.  Canon lenses also need room for AF modules and other electronics Leica M lenses don't have.

Great. Thank you.

However, look at the following comparison.

Leica Summilux 1.4 vs Distagon T* FE 1.4

Both of Leica and Sony do not have mirror.

I prefer Leica's small lens to Sony or Canon's big lens.

So I would like to know their differences. Can Leica give the same resolving power at the small size because there is a secret that other brands do not have?

Even the standard 50mm lens is getting bigger

The latest crop of standard lens in retrofocus design, starting with Zeiss and Sigma are much longer.

YES.

You know what else makes autofocus lenses larger? Autofocus.

e.g. new FD 28 f/2 (1979) - 10 elements, 9 groups, 52mm filter, 63mm x 47.2mm, 265g

EF 28 f/1.8 USM (1995) - 10 elements, 9 groups, 58mm filter, 73.5mm x 55.6mm, 310g

Enjoy the Leica's manual only focusing.
