Is this the beginning of the end?

Hi,

I have been using an EF100-400mm L (mark I) for the last few years now (on and off) and hadn't used it for a while.

Today I took it out for a spin and noticed a serious "clunk" each time the stabiliser kicked in (and stopped for that matter).

I am talking a serious metallic kind of clunk that is very much audible and can also be felt when putting your hand around the front of the barrel!

Now I am quite sure that this clunk was not there on the past and am wondering if this is the first step in the failing process of my IS?

Do any of you, who have used an EF100-400, ever had this happening to their lens, and if so, what was the end result...?

Thanks!!

Oh C'mon people, it's not that much to ask!

Absolutely Useless!! Thanks so much for all the technical feedback...

I should probably have asked something like: "Should I buy the EF100-400mm L Mark II or wait for the Mark III?????  Or is the Eos M5 better than the Eos 6D MarkII...

I out of here, so all the best and HAPPY GAS!!

Well what a nice guy you are. I think we'll be better off without you.

if you are so interested, send your "clunky" lens to canon repair service center and they can let you know what is wrong your lens and how much it'll cost to fix it. sounds like it'll cost a  large wad of cash to fix it so i'd be thinking and planning to buy a new 100-400 II in the near future if you want to replace your clunky lens

You can feel IS come on but its very slight and not a clunk.

The beginning-end result was to get it repaired and then sell it for replacement with a 100-400 II version with a huge loss due to having to first repair it.  You could attempt to sell as-is but full disclosure would be appropriate. You could keep it after its repaired and continue to use it. You could just continue to use it and if the IS fails, simply shut it off and keep shooting.  Good luck with your decision.

Re: Is this the beginning of the end?

Mine is barely audible and can feel very little. I discovered try to correct for front focusing at 400mm that IS setting 1 produced about 2 soft pictures out of 3. While setting 2 or no IS but very fast shutter speeds produced sharp pictures. Not panning, elbow rest, shutter 1/1250+. Problem not discovered during loose element and check up repair. Unfortunately this problem wasn't discovered until after the repair warranty which might have reduced the repair cost. Will try to use as is for a while. I suspect an IS repair could be expensive on top of the$250 and shipping already spent.

A good chance. My bluray player started to "clunk " and now can't load/play a disc.

Sorry for not replying as swift as I ought to. There were IRL things happening and all.

Now I don't have a 100-400 L (though I would buy one if I would be richer), nor did I ever own one in the past.

I do know one of my lenses makes awfull noise when IS is engaged (all the time) and the user manual of another lens tells me not to worry if it would cling when IS engaged or the engagement is ended. So I would consider my answer to your question quite worthless and therefore a waste of your and my time.

No I read your reply I learn that I was wrong. My apologies for that.

And good luck with the lens.

Gas is expensive.

I was not going to reply until I saw this. Because even though I had that lens for a very long time, I never had that issue. And while it sounds pretty bad, I really have know idea what it means.

I generally don't reply where I have nothing valuable to offer. So don't get discouraged. It's not because nobody cares, it's because nobody knows. That is such a high quality lens, the chances of someone having that same issue and stumbling across your post is very small.

I would send it to Canon for an estimate. Good luck!
