EF 28 f/1.8 USM incompatible with Dual Pixel AF?

Hi everybody,

My EF 28mm f/1.8 USM focusses perfectly through the viewfinder. BUT: In Live View with Dual Pixel AF Cameras it has a front focus of about 6 to 10 cm.

This front focus is not correctable through AFMA.

I have tried three 80D cameras and one 70D camera.

The lens has been to the Canon service in Berlin and to the central Canon service in Germany. Both returned it to me with the same result: Yes, it is the lens that is wrong but they don't know what exactly is wrong nor how to fix it. They even said on their camera the lens shows a backfocus.

The Central Canon Service offered me an exchange lens for a price of 240€ while keeping my old lens without a refund. I rejected this offer.

Now here is the most interesting part: I aquired two more used lenses of the same type from ebay in hope of a working sample and both of them showed the same problem, hence I also returned them.

On the contrary every new lens of the same type I have tried in a shop focusses just perfect with Dual Pixel AF on my camera.

Canon lists the EF 28 f/1.8 USM as compatible with Dual Pixel AF. I have a strong suspicion that this is only true for newer samples.

To get a clearer picture I would like to ask any owner of this lens to test it on a Dual Pixel AF camera and post your findings here including the serial number of the lens.

80D and 70D; front-focus; SN: 87280086

80D; front-focus; SN: 84281193

This combo seems to focus perfectly with live view or through the viewfinder.

Using the Canon 28 f1.8 on my 70D in live view the af is perfect.

Serial number on lens is 80970314.
