Will you cancel your M5 pre-order after seeing the A6500?

Honest poll, no flame please.

A little background: I am a long time (>20 years) Canon user and have an extensive system, but I also have a Sony A6000 so I am "straddling two systems" so to speak (though I have much fewer lenses in Sony, see signature). I preemptively sold my 70D in anticipation of acquiring a MILC from either Canon or Sony.

I really think the M5 is a good offering from Canon, as I stated in the following thread:

https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/58377717

However, it is no denying that Sony is way ahead of the game, and what exciting times we live in! Competition and choices are always good for consumers, and it seems especially so this year with APC-S MILCs.

So, honest poll, if you don't like the questions, please move on, but I appreciate your honest opinion too.

Didn´t even preorder. I need to see that M5 really shines. Untill then, I stay away. I would not consider SONY in my dilemma. It´s out anyway.

At canon's price, I was already turned off at the lack of features compared to everyone else. Now the A6500 is out.. yea.. it's more pricy, but it offers so much more, even compatibility with canon's EF/EF-S lenses.

I still like the 22mm and 11-22mm EF-M lenses, but I will reconsider my purchase of the M5.

What I will most likely do is get the A6500 (when prices drop, of course), and then wait for the next canon EF-M camera while I enjoy the A6500 and my M3.

If sony can put all this into a mirrorless camera, what is stopping canon? Why would I pay canon even half of what I pay sony if canon keeps holding back?

This is canons wake up call. Better luck next time.

One feature in the A6500 than snapped my head around is IBIS.  This is a MAJOR advantage over the M5, IMO.  This takes any lens and makes it usable.  The A6500 is a camera that I can see lasting me for a very, very long time.  Based on Canon's past performance in the MILC market, it will take them at least two more camera releases to get even with the A6500.  Maybe not even then because I don't see Canon offering IBIS in any ILC body as it would cannibalize the sale of  IS lenses.

I was about to pre-order, but have now held fire.

The A6500 has given me cause to wait and see what happens when the dust settles.

There's still over a month till the M5 lands. Let's see when the reviews start coming in.

But as yet, I haven't decided.

Re: none of your choices...

Better to wait after CES 2017 and Feb, price will be better and may be we will see more DSLR announcements.

M5 is still way better than any M (with more dials, ergonomic and the look), just need to be price or given more feature to compete.

*No Anti-Flicker? ....that was already part of 80D...

I just wanted to see how the A6500 affects those who preordered.

In the worst case, the A6500 will put severe downward price pressure on the M5. Isn't competition great?

I don't think it changes things much for me.. I'm still on the fence to pre-ordering the M5 and will remain so.

for me, it's simply the timing is bad for the M5, as I will have a fair amount of cash outlays right then.

The A6500 certainly looks good "on paper" .. however with Sony, it's best to wait to see what falls really out of those on paper specifications.

Also the lenses, where the M ecoystem is literally puntable in terms of cost, the Sony to get somewhat equivalent wide angle and normal performance, starts to get into the territory of a serious commitment.

Although I haven’t pre-ordered, I’m leaning towards doing so. If I don’t, it’s most likely wanting to get more feedback before biting the bullet.

Although it’s great to see more options coming out, this isn’t one that’s going to sway my decision. I don’t normally pre-order but have been tempted by the current deals for the M5 (e.g. enhanced trade-in) and already have M lenses - so this would be an affordable way of upgrading my secondary camera, which is something I feel would be hugely beneficial to me.

In the UK, the A6500 is going to be £1500 for the body and it would be a new ecosystem, which means it wouldn’t quite so affordable! In terms of price, it’s more than I want to spend on a secondary camera and makes it a purchase that (sadly) would be later, rather than sooner, whereas I could do with the upgrade now.

I also envy IBIS in A6500 the most. However, I think that Canon won't offer the fantastic function no matter how long I wait for it. So i give up. I am just waiting for the lowered price of M5.

Certain overlaps notwithstanding, the two don't seem all that interchangeable to me. Different price points, different lens systems...

Yup none of your poll answers is relevant to me....

Seems you kind of stacked the deck in terms of yes answers vs no.....

But the other answer would actually be I might cancel my pre-order if I got a hands on with one prior to mine arriving and it didn't feel right or work the way I wanted it to.

Situation is more complicated than just Yes or No.

I have the M and M3. I also have the M5 on pre-order. Will I cancel my order based solely on the A6500 ... no. I am likely to pick up the M5. But after the M5 was introduced, I was disappointed that it did not have 4K video and had ALREADY decided that I would pickup another body/system that supported this feature. The A6500 can go on that list as a possible additional purchase. Although I will probably go with a higher end camera than the A6500, if I go to the work of picking up a second system. From my perspective it is a reasonable decision to buy the M5 to use with my 22 Canon lenses ... even if it has some shortcomings that I end up adding another system to fill.  It makes more economic sense to me to add the M5 body than to start replacing my lenses just to get another body.  Just the 11-22 alone probably destroys the logic of abandoning the M system.

So from my perspective it comes down to a decision of whether I buy the additional system before the M5, buy the M5 first or buy them at the same time. Well ... since the M5 isn't available until the end of Nov, I have time to think it through. If Sony discounts the A7RII going into the holiday's, I will probably just pick it up for my second system.

In a perfect world... Perhaps, but I have way too much Canon glass to even think about buying another brand and more glass.  Therefore, I'll stay with the m5

I didnt pre-order the m5 but was planning on buying in Dec or jan.. Now it needs to be cheaper for me to buy it.  1,400 vs 1,000 is significant but both in roughly the same price category.  If the m5 was 650 or 700 I would pick up right away. I hope canon responds with a big price drop or I will wait out a future model.

I don't really want to get into the sony system but the a6500 still has me paying attention.

Re: Will you cancel your M5 pre-order after seeing the A6500?

I am getting the M5. I have an A6000 and don't have fun shooting with it. I have the body, a Sigma 19, Sony 50, kit lens, and Sony/Zeiss 16-70 and they are all for sale on Craigslist right now. Seeing the A6500 makes me think I might keep a couple lenses and continue with two systems.

I like the specs of the A6500 but there is still no front dial, the screen is tiny when reviewing a 3:2 image, and the touch screen only works for focus point selection. I feel like despite the killer specs, there are always caveats with my Sony setup that make it less enjoyable to use. I will have to wait and take a closer look once there is more info but my feeling is that even if I add an A6500 to my kit, the M5 will be my favorite body to use.

On the positive side, it looks like A mount glass is supposed to work well with the straight adapter, no pellicle mirror is required for good AF. If the A6500 opens up all of the A mount glass and the M5 opens up EF and EF-S glass for native equivalent AF, the mirrorless world has become a lot more interesting.

No, if canon gives 4K, full bandwidth 1080 - 60fps and editable firmware based on EOS SLR (for Magic Lantern).

<snip>

Interesting thought! The 6500 might actually make me oder the M5 for the latter reason. I do like the features of the M5, but I'm disappointed by the added bulk compared to my M2. Now the 6500 would actually look better from a form factor perspective, but I prefer my set of Canon lenses, and the UI.

Now with severe pressure on the street price of M5, the gear-head in me might be tempted to put my hands on one. Would still not (be able to) replace my M2 in the frame bag on my MTB ...

The announcement actually doesn't change anything for me, as the M5 still ticks ALL of my boxes, esp at that price point.  I'll be getting one for sure.

Certainly the Sony is better specced, but I also wouldn't have anywhere near the amount of lenses to work with (as I would with Canon) any time soon.  That would severely limit my shooting for quite some time, esp seeing how I'd still be maintaining an entire DSLR setup as well.

You have already had A6000. If you can sell your A6000, you should go for A6500.
