Birds!
5

I'm far from a specialist when it comes to shooting birds, but I do like trying from time to time. Here are some shots from this summer mainly, shot with the GX7 and E-M1.
Lenses used were a legacy Canon FD 300 f4L and the Panny 35-100 2.8, all handheld.

C&C welcome

Re: Birds!

I'd have cropped much more tightly, lifted the shadows slightly and cloned-out some distracting twigs but otherwise a great set!

IQ wise OK but all too distant IMHO.  I 'm not necessarily a fan of full framers but you need to crop (IQ permitting) or get closer in the first place.  The Spotted Flycatcher has the most potential, doesn't need an awful lot of cropping to make it interesting.

Re: Birds!

Thanks for your comments. Indeed, I should get closer to the subject. Actually, I'm a bit surprised as I thought that a 600mm equivalent would get me close to the action, but in reality, it's not quite there yet.

Cropping can be a part of the solution, but if sharpness and IQ are critical, it's not really an option.

More practice and patience is what I need, I think

One more from this weekend with the GM5 and tiny 35-100 f4-5.6

Shame I didn't shoot raw.

Why.  It looks good to me.  I don't see anything there that would be tweakable in RAW that you couldn't achieve on a jpg.

Re: Birds!

Thanks! Well, I could probably manage a better balance between NR and detail.

agreed (on all points). Pretty amazing with that "short" lens. I quite like the below shot, couldn't resist 2 minutes of editing on this one. Masking would have been better but this was a quick application of On1's smart eraser.
