custom white balance on G7x MKII

Hi all,

I was from G12 background, which is it possible to do custom white balance without taking a picture and then custom the white balance.

Now I have upgraded to G7x MKII and this is not possible!!! It's getting on my nerves!!! I would need to take a picture and then go to custom white balance to set it... wasting a min of my time to custom the WB...

is there anyway to do it the same as my old G12? hit custom WB and it's been set...

It takes -seconds- to shoot a white card, and set it to custom WB.  If that's impossible for you, have your porter do it, maybe.

I have never owned a Canon camera that didn't require setting the custom white balance.  If you always use the same lighting, you only need to set it once and re-use it.  I looked at the G12 instructions and it doesn't appear any different, or did I miss something?

Are you talking about WB presets (Day Light, Shade, Cloudy...)? Those are still available, except in Auto mode. Just like the G12. Even the manual WB correction options remains the same.

Custom WB requires taking a picture of a grey card under whatever special lighting conditions you're shooting in. Not many record a custom WB unless they will be shooting frequently under that lighting. If I'm shooting in mixed lighting and want accurate colors, I include a WB card in a test shot then correct WB in post.

For g12, in shooting mode, I click on function set button, then move to the custom WB, click on menu and it will evaluate the WB.

For g7x, I would need to shoot at the grey card and save it as a picture, then I would need to go to the custom WB, then it will then evaluate the WB based on the grey card I had shot...

why hey I would need to do custom WB, is because I am diving with the camera and at diff depth, the color changes...

Hi there,

The following works on my G7X (mark I), I'd be surprised if it doesn't work on the Mark II:

  1. Press the FUNC/SET button to get the quick settings menu
  2. Scroll to the White Balance setting
  3. Scroll to the Custom 1 or Custom 2 option
  4. There will be a small square on the screen, and the screen shows a live preview of the WB setting. There's also a text stating that if we press the RING FUNC button, it will take a sample from the small square and use it to determine the correct WB. All you need to do at this point is put the grey card into view (inside the square) and press RING FUNC.

Please let me know whether this works, as I'm interested in upgrading to the G7X mark II as well (though more likely I'll wait for the G5X mark II). Hope it works!

I have now got a G7x mk1 and a mk2.    Like you am a diver and use the manual white balance ALL the time.  I am very dissapointed to say that the G7X mk2 does not give a manual white balance correction in the same way as the Mk1  - I have even put the cameras side by side and followed the process of setting the ring function button, and on the Mk2 the options are different, and it only gives the option to shortcut it to the menu where you can change with the ring.

Sadly, for marine use this does not work (ignore the sarcastic response previously, most folk who do not use a camera underwater won't  appreciate the difficulty this causes, and like you I prefer to carry a small white card when diving so I can quickly set the white balance at that depth.  For those that don't understand, the waters around the world have different colour balance in the water itself, for example temperate waters generally have a greenish tinge meanng a magenta adjust is required, whereas as tropical waters that are bluer require a red or orange adjust.

Summary, like you am a little dissappointed. I bought the second G7X to work as a back up.  It doesn't do what I want so may have to consider a change to a Mk1.  I will also drop canon a line as regards this, as it is the same on my 5D, and I also find that irritating.    Oh, and those who comment on it only takes a few moments to do it off an image should try it when diving, as by the time you've buggered about with it the fish has long gone.  I have tens of thousands of photo's of a fishes ar*e because of a split second shutter lag let alone messing with a menu!

Thank you for adressing that.

Also for me this is very dissapointing! While shooting with quick changing light situations - e.g. change between sun/shadow, changes due to moving between color reflecting objects like colorful steel Containers etc. - it is important for me to adjust quickly custom WB.

I have the S90, S95, G1X and G3X. I defined the S-Button for custom WB; within one (!) second, pointing at a small white card and pressing the button, WB is done.

I was shocked, that with my new G9x II (e.g. by Video button) this was not possible anymore.

Re: custom white balance on G7x MKII

Here is how I do it on S95: I press the function menu, and in manual white balance press menu to shoot and evaluate -- no need to first take a shot, then evaluate separately.

On G1Xii I have the shortcut button set to Custom White Balance 1, so I can continuously adjust it with simply press of a button.

I would be very surprised if there weren't a way to do this on G7Xii

Re: custom white balance on G7x MKII

Are there customizable buttons, and would it not be possible to assign custom white balance to one of those.  I think if you do not use the REC button, it ought to be customizable.

On G1Xii I have manual white balance assigned to the shortcut button, I can shoot and set with one press of a button.  If that is not possible in G7Xii, it is a huge backwards step for Canon, and for me the reason to skip over to MFT.
