Which Point and Shoot to Buy?

I am looking for a camera in the price range of a Canon Ixus 180. I really like the look of the Canon Powershot SX610 HS or the Canon Powershot SX270HS, both of which are only slightly more.

Unfortunately they also both are out of stock and that probably means discontinued. And the SX620 is double the price of the SX610!

Is the Ixus decent enough to take good quality photos that are in focus (very important). If it looks like I took it with my cell phone then there is not point so the camera needs to be better.

I just can't figure out what the best option is.

Does canon still make low end small p&s cams?

Most newer smartphones take decent photos, and the image quality wont be a whole lot better with entry level point and shoots. The main benefit would be the zoom, since smartphone pics don't usually hold up well to cropping. There may be some added controls or features on the camera you prefer as well.

To get noticeably better image quality than your phone, I think you need to step up to a better sensor like the g9x. Or at the least an older premium compact like the s120.

I think you should get the sx610 hs because I have that camera and it is better for photography and video but the focus is slightly better than your cell-phone

+1 to rpm40s response. If you can find a way to afford it, go with something like a used or refurbished Canon G9X, with its 1" sensor. (~$300)

You might also consider a Pentax MX-1 or Olympus XZ-2. Their sensors are smaller than the 1" sensors on the aforementioned G9X but the lens is very sharp and bright, and the build quality is excellent, and the sensor is still lots bigger than you'd have in a high-end smartphone.
