Wi-fi to Pc solved (750d etc)
4

One of the reasons I bought my Canon 750d was because it has Wi-Fi. However I soon learnt that you can send JPEG's to smart phones, printers, gdrive etc, but there is officially no way to transfer JPEG's and Raws to PC over Wi-fi. The very function I needed most is missing! The frustrating thing is that the camera is capable of doing it but Canon decided not to allow it!

After a lot of searching, the only method I've found that works with the camera's built in Wi-fi (for Raws too) is using a program called Airnef (works for canon cameras too). All you need is a Wi-fi enabled Pc/laptop etc.

I hope that helps others too.

Good find! When you try it please let us know how long it takes to transfer say 30 RAW over wifi, just to get an idea.

Hello mate. It typically transfers a 30mb raw file in about 10 seconds using ad hoc mode. Infrastructure mode I imagine would double the time, although I haven't been able to get that mode working yet.

Actually having just timed it, a 30mb Raw file transfers in about 8 seconds. That was in infrastructure mode (through the router). I got infrastructure mode working simply by turning off my mobile phone which had Canon's wireless app installed. I could actually just uninstall the Canon stuff from my mobile as I don't even need it now.

Could you write down the steps you connected? I tried to connect my 760d but it doesn't work. Which wifi mode of the camera did you use (dlna, mobile phone etc.)?

Hello mate. I'm away from my camera and pc atm but I'll try and remember from memory. If I can't then we can do it again later when im home.

Make sure your mobile is off if you have Canon wireless apps installed (or just uninstall them).

-On my 750d in its settings, turn 'wifi/nfc' to 'enable' (next, assuming you've already gone through the initial setup, but if not then you'll have to then enter a nickname for your camera).

-then in 750d settings choose 'wi-fi function'. That then brings up the screen to select what you want to connect to. Chose 'connect to smartphone'. The reason you choose 'smartphone' is because Airnef is going to emulate one.

- I think the camera will then ask you to select a mode. I think you have a choice between 'camera access point mode' or 'infrastructure mode'. They differ in that 'infrastructure mode' will reach Airnef through your router that's connected to the PC, whereas the 'camera access point mode' makes the camera create its own wireless network that doesn't go through the router, and you'd have to tell the pc to disconnect from its wired Ethernet connection and then connect to the camera's WiFi network (you'd need a wifi enabled PC or laptop to be able to do that).

I prefer infrastructure mode because you don't have to keep disconnecting the PC's wired Ethernet connection (via network connections), you just connect Airnef and your camera wirelessly through the router. In the camera & when you initially setup your infrastructure mode connection to the router  you'll have to enter your router's wifi network details, ie wifi password of your network etc (there's also the push button WPS setup option but I didn't use that). Don't click on any advanced options, just chose the defaults or auto options.

-on the camera during setup or during connection leave all settings choices on easy or auto.

- start Airnef. In its settings at the top of the screen do this: Canon cameras support SSDP Discovery, which allows Airnef to automatically discover the IP address of your camera when you've set the camera's IP address to "Auto". Simply type "Auto" for the Camera IP address field in Airnef. However, SSDP Discovery may not work on all systems so if Airnef is failing to discover your camera then use the Manual IP address method instead. (Note recap: So it's important in the camera to leave the the cameras ip address on auto, and also type Auto in to Airnef for the IP settings)

There's more detailed instructions here including a YouTube video explaining how to use Airnef: http://www.testcams.com/airnef/

Please let me know if you still have trouble as I'll go through the procedure from scratch when I'm home and write down a more detailed and accurate set of instructions.

The Canon software on the PC is fine as mine has it too. I don't know if it was just a coincidence but I couldn't get airnef working until I turned my mobile phone off. Perhaps the camera tries to connect to that first instead of the PC. Try it with your phone on and off. If Airnef only works with the phone off then leave it off during file transfer or uninstall it. Please do let me know if you get Airnef working, as I've taken an interest now, lol.

Succesfully connected. The problem was not my phone. In the settings of airnef i used a folder name with accentuated letter as download folder. When i changed folder it worked instantly.

Re: Wi-fi to Pc solved (750d etc)

Hi there, I hope this thread is still open. I am trying to do this without success. I am not very savvy with these things sorry. The info below maybe useful in seeing if you can help me.

I am on a mac. In the mac's wifi settings I can see and then connect to my camera. When I have disconnected the camera and reconnect with the mac I have to keep entering the encryption shown on my camera 750d

In airnef I don't know if I am using the correct IP - I have tried trying 'auto' and then the only IP address that I can see on the camera's display.

My phone has been off and on. On my camera I am choosing "smartphone" option in wifi function.

In airnef I have chosen view images to download in both camera and computer. It establishes a connection but it said my camera wont negotiate.

My camera screen tells me connection failed with ERR011 when its on camera and on computer I get ERR12 but I cant find anything about these errors.

I have tried to do this with airnef open and closed while I do wifi function

I have followed the step by step guide by Paul B above and I noticed above that a folder name caused a problem for Safranek but I cant find a folder to change.

I am now losing the will to live I hope you are able to help me and send thanks for trying

Hello mate. I've never used a Mac (only Windows), & so I can't really offer any good advice in that respect. However, Airnef has its own forum. You will get much better advice there instead of using dpreview.

I also have an iMac.  My T6s (760d) has wifi and my workaround is simple ... IF you have an iPhone or iPad.  Using either the camera's wifi or a simple SD to lightning connector card reader, I transfer my photos to my Apple device.  I usually use the wifi transfer for the phone, and the card reader for the iPad.  Then it's a simple matter to select the pictures I want on my iMac, wait a few seconds for AirDrop to recognize the computer, and then just hit the send button.  AirDrop is fast and reliable ... as long as you have AirDrop enabled.

Alternately, you can have your devices share the same iCloud account which will store your photos on all devices, although this can be quite a slow process.  If you're not hung up on a wireless transfer, there's always that SD slot on the computer itself.

Thank you both, your time is appreciated.

If I cant get it to work then I will go down the phone > Airdrop route - I didn't even think of that. Brilliant ! I have a Macbook Air and I really miss the card slots

Thanks again guys, I am looking forward to getting this done a little easier now

On the Airnef website they have their own forum. You'd probably get a better result asking the same question there. The software writer actually replies himself, but can take a day or 2.

All the best

Honestly really bad of canon for them to do this. Whats the difference between a PC nowadays and a smart device. They sell you a camera with WiFi, they give you a cd with software that allows remote shooting and they don't enable it on this firmware. The 80d has the option of PC when you go to WiFi so why can't the 750d. Have they released a new firmware to fix this issue.

I want remote shooting with my laptop over WiFi and I can't get it to connect.

Thanks

Hi. I don't own a 750d anymore, nor did I ever try remote shooting. I did manage to get jpeg/raw file transfer to pc over wi-fi using a program called airnef. I think you can do remote shooting via smartphone though.
