Why would you not buy EOS M5?

If you do not want to buy EOS M5, what is the obstacle in the first place?

I should have added one more thing. "Not fullframe"

I voted "Others" because there is a hierarchy of factors involved for me.

First, if it doesn't match or come close to the IQ I already get from my other mirrorless, I won't be interested at all. That's the deal breaker for me.

Second, if the AF with my EF mount lenses is dodgy using my Canon EF-M adapter, I'd have second thoughts.

Third, if it does match or come lose in IQ and the AF works fine with the adapter, then I'd wait for the price to come down.

I don't use video so that doesn't matter to me.

Hmmm.  Honestly could not find one checkbox that would keep me from buying it.

Yes, it is not a simple question. Many things are involved.

I wish the first two would not be the case and regarding the third one, time will tell.

So, would you buy it anyhow as soon as possible?

I should have added that choice.

It's all about autofocus. The rest will be fine.

Yeah, I have it pre-ordered. I come from a 70D, so I believe in its potential.

Some of my thoughts are in this previous thread...

Hi All

Its not full frame and you need an adapter

for EF lenses (all 120 million of them)

also a mini SLR style body not rangefinder

Yeah, I should have added the option for "Not fullframe"

also a mini SLR style body not rangefinder

The option "not compact" was given for those who want rangefinder style as well as compact form like M2.

Jon

Thanks.

Do you think M5's dual pixel is better than AF of Sony A6300 or even A6000?

The touch interface of EOS Ms is very exciting, but in terms of accuracy and speed Sony seems to be better than DPAF. Correct me if it is not.

Sorry that I do not have any experience of both DPAF and Sony.

I am interested in it and may buy (I am too interested in mirrorless cameras for my own good) but its price in the UK is giving me pause as it feels about £200 too much.  They are trying to offset that here by including the adapter for EF/EF-S lenses, but I already have one of those anyway.

I also wish it had a silent, electronic shutter option as I find that a very important feature to have (maybe the "electromagnetic shutter" entry in the poll refers to that, but strictly speaking that term is more appropriate as a description of the unusually quiet mechanical shutter design introduced in two recent Panasonic models (G80/85 and GX80/85).

We can't tell for sure yet of course.  Not until it gets into some experienced hands.  But I think it has the potential to be on-par with the A6300 (my having used the 70D's DPAF for quite some time now).

Granted, Sony has always performed magic with their technology.  I've owned and shot with a whole bunch of Sony cams over a period of 15+ years.  IMHO they have the best full Auto modes of any cameras out there (literally just point and shoot).  I recommend them to every Tyro who asks.

But I really love Canon's DSLRs.  They've brought me some of the most astounding pictures you can imagine.  And when the 70D debuted with the DPAF sensor, it literally transformed my Live View and Video experience (esp with that great touchscreen interface!).

So I have great expectations of the M5.  Sure, it might turn out to be a lemon in real world use, but I am really anxious to give it a try.

I replied "price" but basically the reason is "because it's too close in both price and features to the 80D I already own." If I didn't have the 80D... well, the price is a bit steep, especially around here (1179€).

Currently using a 70D, and I really thought I would get the M5 instead of the 80D until I saw one thing that no one is mentioning. NO back button focus!? This is probably a deal breaker for me. I thought a lot of people use back button focus. I love it and don't see myself going away from it just for this camera. I bought a much more compact Olympus em10 mark ii for less than half the price of the M5 and it has back button focus if I want it. What is going on Canon? I see a Sony a6300 in my future.

Even my M1 allows the * button to be assigned to BBF. If the M5 doesn't allow that, it's a deal breaker for me too.

I already have one.  I have the switchable AF/MF-AEL button assigned to the upper switch position to AF/MF Toggle and the lower switch position assigned to AF-ON.

Maybe I am in the wrong. I don't know if the * can be set to af. It doesn't look like a very comfortable position, but I would have to get my hands on it.

You are right, the closeness in price makes it a tougher decision.  I don't own the 80D but I'm struggling with the decision to either go with the 80D for the few added benefits (some weather sealing, fully articulating screen, better battery life) with the trade off of bulk, or wait until the M5 comes down in price and go with the M5. If I had to order something today, I think I'd go with the 80D.

Re: Why would you not buy EOS M5?

On the M3 you can assign back button focus to the "left" on the directional pad (I think you have to put the focusing system in AF + MF or something like that), it works fine. I'm sure the M5 will have a way to do it.
