Re: Remarkable camera

My wife loves her 330.

I bought a Panasonic FZ300 for a long vacation to several national parks. While I really like it, I have already started carrying my Elph300 instead on some hikes. It's too bad the market is dying for this type of camera.

I also have the 330HS and think it is an excellent camera. Since I bought it, I also purchased the S120 and the G7X Mark ii that I love. The 10X zoom combined with image quality makes it a remarkable camera. Just for fun, I looked at KEH camera located in Georgia and they have a used 330HS in excellent condition for $89.00 in case anyone is interested. And no, I don't work for them. Hope this thread stays open for a long time.

How would you compare your S120 to your 330 HS? I had the S110 and ended up selling it because I didn't feel like the difference between the IQ of both cameras was so different that it warranted keeping the S110 with its much shorter zoom range. Sure, the IQ was a bit better due to the larger sensor, but it wasn't drastically better. And I LOVED the S110, but the 330 HS really delivered. And it had a much greater zoom range, which was very useful.

A little odd, replying to my own thread 8 months later; but I thought I'd update my post.

I still have the ELP 330HS. One of mine is in my car 24/7. I've also added another one that is in mothballs as a reserve - just in case. I've now owned 3 of these little gems (the third was a gift to my grandson) and they were identical in image quality. More on that later.

I have also added a Canon G7X II. IMHO a significant step forward over the G7X, thanks to the DIGIC 7 processor.

I also went and bought a used SX260HS. Since it has pretty much the same sensor as the ELPH, and a similar processor, there's no real improvement over the ELPH; but it's got over 2x the zoom range.

Over several years, I have owned four different SX260HS or SX240HS with quite a lot of variation in image properties. Two were very good, the other two were not and were promptly returned. In contrast to my very positive experiences with all the ELPH 330HS's. I can't recall seeing a bad report on the ELPH on this forum. I also got lucky with my G7X II.

Thanks for responding Jerry, even though it was 8 months later. I really appreciate your thoughts on these cameras as you're one of the people on this forum whose thoughts and comments I really value and hold a lot of weight for me.

Re: It took me awhile to get one

These photo's taken by you are simply stunning. I managed to get hold of a 330 and I am very impressed by its Auto Mode, although I am still a far way off from the quality of photos you produce. May I ask what settings you use most of the time?

I realize this thread is 7-8 months old, but this camera has come back to the forefront for me because I recently found another 330 HS on ebay for $50. The seller didn't have a battery to test it so was selling "as is" complete with box and everything that was included when it was new. I sold mine some time ago, having gotten caught up in the G7X/G7X II frenzy, but recently saw some shots taken with one, and remembered what an outstanding little camera it is. Once it arrived in the mail, I put a battery in (I have a whole host of batteries from the many cameras I seem to continuously buy and sell!), and it works perfectly! It's also in excellent cosmetic condition as well. I'm always amazed at the sharpness of the lens and the amount of detail the camera captures. In a lot of ways, it reminds me of the Olympus Stylus Epic (Mju II) in that it's a simple point and shoot camera in a very compact body with an outstanding lens that consistently yields excellent results. It really is an example of everything coming together just right!

Andy

No problems, I still got notified!!

You would have noticed that my shots were all in pretty much ideal conditions. i like to travel to sunny destinations a lot at least partly because they get me the kind of pictures i like. This camera is so good for travelers - tiny but still with a 10X zoom. I hope to post more images taken with the Canon P330 after the Memorial day. But I believe against most of the recent 1" sensor cameras, its image quality viewed at 100% will be competitive but not quite as good.

Your C&C of the pictures I posted will be appreciated.

Here are the SOOC ELPH 330 photos I promised to upload after the Memorial Day weekend. I used the super vivid mode for all of them. And just for comparison, I also shot the same scenes using a Nikon D600 + Nikon 28-300mm lens. All the D600 photos are SOOC jpegs except the ones from the Red Rock Canyon where I pp'd them a little to crank up the vibrance, saturation, contrast and sharpness. Each ELPH photo is followed by the Nikon D600 image just below it for ease of comparison. Please let me know your thoughts.

Any chance the Elph 360 HS has some of the same qualities?

Re: Remarkable camera

To me the second ones - Nikon - are better. The first ones seem too bright.

I sometimes use the much derided Canon SX280HS and am quite satisfied. I will look out for one these Elph 330 though - Ixus 255 in the UK I think. They seem to be about £120 on Amazon today.

That's because Canon hasn't released a Powershot camera worth commenting on for several years.

Except for the G1X II, G3X, G5X, G7X, and G7X II... yeah, except for all of those.

It depends what you want in a compact camera. I considered G7 X II carefully:

1) It's small, yet it doesn't fit my pocket.

2) It's got a fast lens yet it's very soft.

3) It goes to 24mm but sharpness is uneven in the 24-35mm range, which is noticeable even in small prints.

4) It writes RAW, but RAW files are larger than my D3300 NEFs (even when compressed to DNG!), which I find completely ridiculous since G7 X lens delivers 3MP at best, and 35 1.8 DX on D3300 delivers 12MP (easy 60x40 prints).

So I wouldn't buy it even for $100 simply because it doesn't do what I need it to do. It's not a carry-everywhere-all-the-time cam, and it fills up my HDD with huge files without detail.

In the end, I got myself an SD4000 for dirt cheap and couldn't be happier about it, with CHDK loaded. DNGs downsampled to 6MP are only around 3MB in size, which is sufficient for people/event photos. Got lens profile, color profile and a grey card - complete control, just like my DSLR. With G7 X, you can't turn off lens correction in LR for example. ELPH 330 HS was my second choice!

None of the models released after ELPH 330 HS caught my attention, I just don't consider them "value for money".

None of those cameras are worth commenting on.

The Quality of the photos from those cameras is no better than my G1X or G16. That's what I meant when I said for several years Canon's P&S  have pretty much stayed the same. They haven't really produced a new camera that is any better in the last few years. Oh, they changed the Form-factors and made some cosmetic changes and added some gimmicky features....but in reality? Nothing new and innovative. Mostly Canon's P&S are "Ho-Hum" cameras. Maybe the G3X which has a longer zoom. But then you have to worry about the "error" messages. If they make a G3X II maybe I'll come on board. But until then.....?

I am happy with the G1X and G16. Also the S110 and the EOS M2. But until they come up with something that is indeed new, improved and truly innovative....I'll sit on the sidelines. Because none of the other manufacturers are doing any better.

I have no idea what you mean by "new, improved and truly innovative", and obviously neither do you.

I bought an ELPH 330 for my wife and she loved it. It was easy for her to use and made very nice pictures. After a few years I got an SX610HS for her, and she hated it. She had to remember to lift the flash and after about 6 months started to use her old 330 again and is very happy with it.

Still a great little camera.  Also, it doesn't seem to vary much from example to example.

A 66 GTO?  I was really upset when GM dropped the Pontiac line.

Re: Remarkable camera

Jerry,

Speaking of "late" replies, your review and those of others convinced me that buying a used 330 HS was a good move. I had a much earlier version of this cam and loved it. I have been reviewing / editting some pics taken with it in the Tongas Natl. Forest and was surprised at the quality. I also used it on a later trip to Costa Rica and, to my chagrin, lost it. I've pined for it every since when I want a grab-and-go from my pocket. After considerable research, I bought. This will complement my recently purchased Olympus micro 4/3-rds and a compact Nikon.

Best regards,

/Roger

Re: Remarkable camera

Glad that my old review was helpful.  I still have mine; but situations change, and other cameras have taken over most of the work load.  The 330HS was one of those cases where the sum is greater than the parts used.
