My trip to east Africa (100-400 pics)
14

Hello everyone,

So I went for two weeks to Kenya, Uganda and R'wanda, it was my first visit to africa and my first safari experience so far.

To summarize it: An incredible trip, both nature and people. It's sometimes very hard to see the people and their poverty, but at the same time, they are very satisfied with small things unlike here in the west.

Unfortunately we only had 2 days for safari, one in Masai Mara, Kenya and the other in Murchison, Uganda. Still we saw the big five (Rhino's in a sanctuary so maybe we were cheating ) and a lot of other species.

I took with me the GX80+100-400 and a G7 which was having the 7-14, 25 1.4 or 35-100 attached. Today I want to share my wildlife pictures, later on I might share some people / Landscape shots. Keep in mind this is my first safari, but comments are welcome.

Hadada Ibis

Baboons (Graphic :-P)

Crowned Plover (Find the Egg)

Leopard (A male lion was sleeping below, leopard was checking him out)

Lion close up

Giraffe at sunrise

Handsome male lion

Lazy cheetah

Elephants and Masai Mara landscape

Mackinnon's Fiscal, I find his back wings as interesting as his head

Malachite Kingfisher. Highlight bird of this trip

Marabou stork, the ugliest bird in the world?

Village weaver, one of the prettier ones

White Rhino. Enjoying life without predators to worry about.

Lion. It's just a yawn

Buffalo

Alligator, the biggest one I've ever seen.

Palmnut Vulture

I'm the last to critique others photos but they look great to me. The 100-400 is on my list as I hope to do some real birding.  Love the bokeh in the weaver picture almost as much as I like the subject.

I'm not sure a safari is in my future unless I go alone but your pictures make it incredibly tempting.

Haha guess you're right, misunderstood the guide. These things don't swim in my backyard

Great pics!  I just got back from southern Africa and I've found that while I enjoy the pics I took with the animals really zoomed in, my favorites are the ones that are wide enough such that the landscape is visible as well (kind of like your elephant photo).  So much of the experience is watching the animals in their natural habitat... too much telephoto and you lose some of the context of the shot (at least for me).

Hey Adgadg

Those are some nice pictures mate. Why only 2 safaris in 14 days, just curious.

Also you were lucky, way more than me to see the Wild Dogs, though being a birder, I am more jealous of the Malachite Kf, the Palmnut Vulture, and the Haddad Ibis.

Those are some nice pictures, there's some nice details in the KF and Village weaver picture there. Lovely.

Keep them coming, waiting for the people shots.

Cheers Adgadg

Nice shots. The 40-150R does well, and the leopard running with the RX10 looks great!

Some really great shots in this set! The Weaver is really nice especially.

I'm still considering Africa for a milestone birthday next year.

Thank you very much.

I would have preferred more days but it was a group trip, the others were not that much interested in wildlife and also wanted to see some culture. Also parks are quite expensive in East Africa and the others didn't want to spend very much.

Besides we had to drive from Kenya to R'wanda, approximately 2000 kilometres on sometimes pityfull roads.

I did not see any wild dogs, only some hyena's. Masai Mara in particular is incredible, wildlife is abundant.

Thanks! I agree a surrounding can add a lot to a photo, your cheetah is outstanding! Still I like seeing them close and personal, love the detail.

Most of our encounters did not have an amazing surrounding like yours, yet I did take a few more beside the elephants.
