Help! Battery dies quickly, what to do, replace or repair?

I accidentally left it plugged into the charger for more than 24 hours, and ever since it's been dying quickly.

Before this, it's been working perfectly since 2008.

Can you recommend a place to buy a replacement battery? What specific things should I watch out for?

Do I need a new charger too?

My camera is Rebel XSi 450D.

I would guess that the fault is with the battery and not the charger.  You could find the battery replacement on the internet and probably a local store.  Google (or whatever search engine you like) is your friend.

Many years ago I used to "toast" my quick charging batteries occasionally if I left them charging too long.  I would just have to get new batteries.

I've had great luck with Wasabi batteries in several cameras.

Just don't get Duracell brand replacement batteries as they can only last for a few (15 or so) recharge cycles before they pack up.

If you still have the original battery, I am surprised it lasted this long.  Lithium batteries need to be replaced every few years regardless of use.  I have had to replace my laptop battery every 3-4 years.  The same has occurred with my cellphone.  They rarely fail outright but just lose the ability to hold a charge.

If you got eight years from your original Canon battery, you have done well indeed!

For a new battery, if you can order from Amazon, that's the place where I go. As others have said, I've had good results with Wasabi batteries (less than half the cost of a Canon battery) but original Canon batteries always do better for me and can talk to the Canon charger. The other batteries do not have Canon battery gauges built in so they can go from full to empty in the camera's display in a few minutes. My best results come from having a Canon battery in the camera at the beginning of the day and a Wasabi on hand as a backup.

Anyone who thinks they're finding an original Canon battery for less than half price is most likely getting a counterfeit battery. There are a lot of them.

Actually, coincidally, my 650D's original battery has began to lose it's charge very quickly so looks like it's time is up. It's lasted pretty much exactly 4 years of constant usage so seems like it's done well for itself. A new one has now been ordered.

Now i just have to replace the smartphone one and iPod - oh, wait, u can't swap that one out...

Thank you Steve, I appreciate your sharing. After reading your advice I ended up buying the Canon one just to be safe, but will keep your other recommendation in mind in case a spare is needed!

That wasn't my experience with the inov8 battery for my 450d/XSi. I alternated that with the original Canon, wasn't particularly aware of which battery was in the camera and the charging and charge indication seemed fine. There may have been a difference but not one I noticed without taking test measurements etc.

I'd say similar for the Hahnel HL-E in my 700D - couldn't tell you without looking which is in the camera at the moment, that or the original.

+1 The Wasabi batteries have always functioned the same as genuine Canon batteries in all of the cameras I've bought them for (incl Canon chargers).

I used to always play it "safe" and bought only Canon batteries, but the reports on Wasabi batteries online were always so positive, so I gave them a try.  Now I automatically buy the 2 batts + charger kit whenever I buy a camera, and that way I always have a charger for the car too (charger also includes car plug-in).  And the whole kit costs half of what a single Canon battery costs.

The only difference I've ever found is that the Wasabi batteries give me about 80% the capacity of the genuine Canon batts.  But having a couple of spares around is really nice.  The Hahnel batteries I've used do provide the same capacity (and same functionality) as the Canons, but around here they cost just as much as the Canons.

I have certainly heard reports of bad batteries found online, but I now include Wasabi on my "trusted" list.

To the OP, you certainly can't go wrong with the OEM Canon batteries.  You'll get all of the capacity, and the peace of mind that goes along with it.  I do usually pick up a spare Canon or Hahnel battery to throw in the rotation as well myself.

Tell that to my 2007 HP514 1st generation "smartphone" batteries.  I have two which every few or more months I swap over.  Still getting 2 or 3 days on standby.  Bluetooth hits them hard though.

Come to think of it the Canon 450d and its batteries are 2009.
