Where's the problem, with the straight-through adapter, EF lenses work perfectly on M bodies.

while that's somewhat true, as an example a 60mm EF-S does not work perfectly on an M5.

What's wrong with it?

has an extreme amount of difficulty focusing under around .7:1, even in adequate light.  just refuses to focus.

I agree, but I also think the mirrorless will be the norm in say 4-5 years. Not quite there yet for me at this point but getting closer every year.

The norm?

Perhaps for a Still Stills shooter.  As an action shooter, I'd hate to give up my OVF DSLR.  I don't particularly care for the EVF on my Fuji.  EVF is like looking at an iPhone.  Differnt strokes.

I think that Canikon will produce mirrorless in addition to DSLR's.  The D850 is so popular, that Nikon can't keep up with demand... for now.   I don't think they are going away anytime soon, or in my life time.

I don't understand. Are you too close or what?

Where's the problem, with the straight-through adapter,

adapters add movement and flex. have you ever seen how much movement there is when you stack a 2x extender with an adapter ?

EF lenses work perfectly on M bodies.

A FF M will have an M mount and an EF-adapter and the EF lenses will work just as well as the M lenses.

I would like to see some L quality pancake M lenses from Canon

P.S. More mirrorless may appear, but DSLRs will be around for a long time yet.

mirrorless can easily use EF and EF-S lens

yes, I'm sure they can. But if you were a sports/wildlife shooter and found that your 500mm f/4 II didn't AF as quickly on the  brand new FF mirrorless - would you be happy?

The question is not whether they work, but how well they work, and whether needing to use an adapter is good for you

I'd make a couple of points about that.

For one, a 2x extender will most often suggest a rig that works better with a full-sized camera anyway.  I suspect that for a number of reasons, mirrorless 1-digit and 2-digit Canon cameras using EF lenses will always be "full sized."

Moreover, if the adapter is made to be semi-permanent--removable only with tools or maybe even requiring professional service--it can be perfectly solid.

I haven't tried the EOS M adapter, but have never found using extenders or extention rings a problem.  I often use the 1.4x TC on the 100-400, sometimes the 2x, and sometimes both, and have even added a third Kenko one.  No problem.  Same with adding extention rings for closer focusing, with or without extenders.

Was a bit of flexing your only concern?

I wonder if attitudes have changed now that we’ve seen the first mirrorless FF from Canon and it doesn’t have an EF mount

In https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/58348916 I wrote:

"Canon will release a full frame mirrorless with a short flange distance and a simple extension tube to allow EF lenses to be used to their full potential.

A new line of EF lenses will be released to take advantage of the short flange distance."

I guess I can stick to that. We now know that this new line of EF lenses is called RF.

Mine did.

I was a big content DSLR luddite.   Several factors about the R convinced me to add it.

Better AF with my existing lenses.

AF in even lower light.

Insane lens designs, not for ones I wanted, but they showed the potential.

The control ring on the lenses and an adapter.

Complaints that it was too big for a mirror less.   I like big.   That's why I had planned to stay with DSLR.

Once I got it, I really liked EVF for less than ideal lighting conditions.    OVF is better in ideal lighting conditions.   I liked the customization options.    And I liked the touch screen for AF point selection.  It's a good camera.

Re: 2 years since this poll

I think that we are seeing the best possible outcome for the transition from an SLR dominated world to a mirrorless world.  It is obvious from the technology of the more expensive R lenses that have been released that Canon has been working on the R mount and mirrorless technology for a long time.  I suspect that mirrorless technology has a significant impact upon Canon's video camera line and its lucrative sales there.

That being said, I think that we have seen an interesting but imperfect first full frame offering from Canon in the EOS R body.  My problem with the body has to do with its lack of certain professional features that Sony has implemented so well in its similarly priced A7III.  I am quite satisfied with having to use an adapter on my existing Canon EF mount L lenses on either a Canon R mount or Sony E mount.  Right now the Sony seems to outperform Canon in mirrorless bodies.  I am hoping that Canon will release over the next 12-15 months a professional body has the same functionality in a mirrorless body that we are used to in our XD series of SLRs.  If that happens I will return to being solely a Canon shooter.  If not then I will begin to migrate to the more professional next generation of Sony professional bodies.   I really would like a global shutter in my next mirrorless body.  I don't need 20+ frames per second but 10 should be achievable.  I also want something in the 30+ megapixel range.   So I am still on the fence.
