My trip to Santorini

Agreed, for warmth it would be Crete, Rhodos, Cyprus, maybe Malta and Sicily. Anyway, December often should be fine (in central Europe) if you can stand some cold. It's rather up to November when it is often gray and wet. If you want snow the best would be to wait for January or February (all this goes for central Europe).

Thank you both for the suggestions - we will begin planning and hope to get some time off, finally...

We had 10 days on Santorini in April and could have stayed longer, but we also lost at least 3 days to illness. And I was born on an Island so really enjoy the special feeling and pace... and it was the first time in 15 years that I was actually not on call at work. :/

I guess it depends on your style and what other places you may be considering. We had about 4 days in Athens on either end then finished with 5 days in Italy (which was just enough to make us really want to go back!)

My impression is that Santorini is overrun in the summer and expensive, but the shoulder season was very pleasant if you're ok with limited services.

Ancient Thira, Perissa and Imerovigli with Skaros were highlights, and renting a car to see the less traveled areas was well worth it.
