Upgrading from the S120 to...? Help!

I've had the Canon PowerShot S120 since it came out, and I truly love it...But it's had it's fair share of knocks and bumps over the last few years, and I need to replace/upgrade. The problem is, I just can't figure out what to upgrade to!

The most obvious choices in the range are the G9x or the G7x Mark II. Either of them are superior to the S120 in several ways. However, one of the most important features (to me) is the zoom range...And in that feature, they are both inferior to the S120: The S120 is 24-120, the G7xMii is 24-100, and the G9 is a paltry 28-84. And I KNOW I need and use ever inch (mm of my S120's 24-120.

So...If it's a given that I love the S120 and need the 24-120 range that it offers, is there anything else out there in the Canon range that I'm missing that has at least that range, as well as a similar quality and build as the S120?

Thanks in advance for any/all advice

There is G1X, but it won't really help you much with zoom, and it is bigger.

I believe that both sensor and the lens of the G7X is good enaugh for cropping your image from the original, still giving you the quality you had with your S series, while for focal lenghts 100mm and shorter, you will even gain some. For G9X, it might not be enaugh, and it really migbt be a downgrade in this regard.

G7X as crashpc has said. You might also consider Panasonic TZ100.

Keep in mind you can crop from 1" sensor and still get better results than from smaller chips.

  • The s120 has a 1/1.7" 12Mpixel sensor with a 120mm (eq) lens.
  • The G9x use 1/1.4" 10Mpixel sensor area at 120mm equivalent focal length
  • The G7x use 1/1.2" 14Mpixel sensor area at 120mm equivalent focal length

Well, yes, that's true...But I use my point a lot, and don't usually want to have to crop/edit the photo I take with it (I use my D800 if I'm shooting something that needs editing).

Yeah, I think I'm pretty locked into the G7x then...Can't do the Panasonic, I'm such a fan of the Canon user interface, I don't think I could bring myself to switch

S120 poor in low light, g7xii is stellar

no comparison, g7x flash tilts does not produce red eye, does not bother eyes.  If you can handle the 3 extra ounces, night and dat

You might consider a G15 or G16.  28-140 mm f/1.8-2.8, and quite good in low light.  Not much bigger or heavier than a G7X II.  Also, if fitted with a neck cord (lanyard) or wrist strap it slips easily into a trousers pocket if they are looser fitting.

But a confession from me.  More and more I'm using an IXUS 255 (ELPH 330HS).  Surprisingly good, covers 24-240 mm, and at wider angles is good in low light.
