G11.... to Raw or to JPEG

It it just me or are the out of camera jpegs better then the raw files, i only have the DPP software and the raws come out cheap looking, i have to keep the sharpness to 0/1 then do it in photoshop, tried high pass and unsharp mask. But seems noisy but cleaner wierd

Just wanted to know what other g11 fans did or do.

Pic below is a jpeg just for the hell of it!

I had the G11 for years and can vouch that it takes great jpegs. Took many a good photo with the G11 straight out of the camera. Keep enjoying it

I have used the G11 to very good effect shooting RAW.  Your results with RAW shooting will be very much dependent on your skills in the "digital" darkroom.

I've always been very pleased with the Jpeg results from my G11 and all of my bridge cameras, for that matter. The G11 still continues to impress!

Wishing you the best in your photography,

Tony

RAW is skill-dependent

I shot with a G10 and used DPP for a few years.  At first my out-of-camera jpegs did look better, in terms of color, contrast and sharpness.  But they lacked dynamic range and micro detail.  How did I find that out?  By practice, practice, practice with DPP!  Don't be afraid of experimenting until you find your better raws.  It's in the files, waiting to be teased out.

I never had a G11, but continue to use a G12. Totally agree that the quality of processed RAW is a matter of user skill. I've managed to rescue some less than marginal shots. Even for for a small sensor camera like the G11, there's more useable data in RAW files than JPEGS. It's just a matter of learning how to take advantage of it.

Cool yeah took me ages to get the right mix for my 400D raws. Maybe just need to keep messing around in the final touches, i find the raws do have better details just noiser gotta get the right blend haha

With good lighting, correct WB and exposure, and lower ISO's generally not too much gained with RAW.

However (especially with smaller sensors) as ISO increases and lighting quality decreases, the benefits of RAW's noise reduction and shadows/ highlights recovery increases; as noted in my post HERE.

Thing to remember about JPG images is how they're process; i.e., JPG processing only keeps the image data it determines to keeps, then compresses the kept data and save as 8-bit image file. Hence why when you shoot a JPG+RAW image the RAW file much larger file size.

When editing JPG images you're limited to only modifying the compressed, 8-bit image data saved by the JPG process; i.e., you cannot change a well done steak back to a raw steak.

With RAW file you have all the sensor image data at sensor's full bit depth.

All comes down to each his/her personal preferences.

Cheers,
Jon

Re: G11.... to Raw or to JPEG

I have a G12 a year later model than the G11, but essentially the same camera. RAW files with this camera are only good at ISO 100, any higher there is more noise than image. SO if you want RAW files, keep it to ISO 100.

My HS35EXR Fuji can walk all over the Canon in RAW, but processors for Fuji RAW files "SUCK". You just can't win for loosing.

Always got more detail and/or less noise using Lightroom. G15 or larger sensor devices...
