Samsung NX100 + Manual lenses

I've recently bought a Samsung NX100 (body only) because I like to play around with older, manual lenses. I also have a M42/NX adapter, but unfortunately the adapter's "claws" (sorry, I don't know the proper name of those three holder thingies) are not wide enough. When I put the adapter on the body one of the "claws" should press a silver button under the cameras mount which tells the camera there's a lens on it. If it doesn't depressed the camera won't allow you to shoot. My adapter cannot depress this silver bullet-looking button.

It was quite a problem first, but Google was my friend, so I found the solution, and entered the Developer Menu, enabled the NO LENS RELEASE, and voilá! now I can shoot pictures. So far so good.

But. Without that little silver button depressed the camera doesn't allow you to use the Focus Assistant. I don't want to buy another adapter (how should I know whether those "claws" have the appropriate size on the new one). So my question is this: is there any software-wise solution for this (i.e. "hacking" into the camera)? Because I couldn't find anything in the Developer Menu (I entered the advanced one)...

So, clicking OK button on the back of the camera does not engage MF zoom? Even if set in menus?

Re: Samsung NX100 + Manual lenses

Exactly. If you don't have a lens on the body, the camera doesn't allow you to take pictures (this is the factory setting), so when yo try to shoot "No Lens." message appears on the screen. Entering the Developers Mode you can allow the camera to shoot w/o lens on, but since this button under the lens mount on the body is not depressed, the camera will still think there's no lens at all - thus doesn't allow you to use certain functions, like the Focus Assist, even it is enabled in the menu.

The silver button which the lens's or the adapter's "claw" should push down...

... turn the mode dial to "M"

Re: Samsung NX100 + Manual lenses

It is on M - since I'm using full manual focus lenses I don't have many choices here (though it seems I can also use A, metering works fine, it selects the proper shutter speed, but I still use the camera on M nonetheless).

Some people (bancika IIRC) had success with gluing a small piece of plastic (or just using glue of it's possible, epoxy, gel, etc) on the fin of the bayonet on the mount that's too short. Others put pieces of toothpick in there but I would not do that.

Re: Samsung NX100 + Manual lenses

yep, I have. and I did try this. unfortunately the adapter's quite tight on the body, so even when I put only two layers of cello-tape I couldn't screw the adapter back.

Re: Samsung NX100 + Manual lenses

well, I just don't want to permanently modify the camera this way - or at least yet. first, I try to find some software/firmware solution, like the one I did in the DevMenu.

Re: Samsung NX100 + Manual lenses

You should not modify the camera but the adapter (by extending the fin). But I would just get another adapter...

Yeah, butt how will I know whether the next adapter's fin (is it actually called fin?) will be the proper size?

I have an NX100 that I use with Minolta lenses.  I bought inexpensive adapters thru ebay and had to return one that didn't work due to sloppy tolerances.  Send it back and get another.

I don't use ebay. And what's the guarantee that the next one will be okay? I rather solve this problem software wise - if it is possible at all... By the way, is there any program to modify the NX100's firmware? Or a thorough service manual?

Re: Samsung NX100 + Manual lenses

If you want guarantees, I recommend buying an expensive adapter that will fit the camera correctly.

Sorry, I'm not aware of a way to modify the camera's firmware.

Forget the software fix, this is all you have to do to your adapter to make it work, epoxy or in this case plastic padding is your friend!

before anyone asks , this is an adapter I was making up for a russian lens.

cheers

Re: Samsung NX100 + Manual lenses

Sorry, but I really can't see the modification here... Did you put something there? (I'm not trolling, I really don't know what to look at.) By the way, I'm not really a DIY guy when it comes to measuring, glueing, cutting, etc... I don't really know where to start modifying my adapter.

Re: Samsung NX100 + Manual lenses

Ok, you have to apply a little plastic padding to the grey area that the arrow points at and only on the lip that depresses the button on the nx body (1 of 3) when its hard a little sanding and you are good to go.

and if you are still not keen on diy then you must look for an adapter where the flanges are not depressed as in this example.

See this ...

I had similar problem with an adapter and ended up fixing it like this. Very easy.
