has anyone try "STM" lens on older Canon T2i body?
1

Hi all.  I left Canon dSLR for mirrorless 3 years ago, and just scored an amazing deal on a used Canon T2i + 18-55mm IS lens.  Having been spoiled by the Silent AF of most mirrorless camera (Sony, M43, and EOS-M), I'm surprised by how LOUD the Canon 18-55mm IS II sound to my ear.  I had this exact lens, 2 copies on both my Canon XSi and Canon T1i, but I didn't realized they're were this noisy.

Question is has anyone here bought the new Canon 18-55mm STM, and used it on the old Canon T2i?

Is there any benefit to buying a new STM lens on a 3-4 years old body now?  Is Live View on T2i silent with a STM lens?  or do I need to buy a newer Canon T4i?

thanks

Yes. I've used STM lenses on a T1i (500D), so on an even older body. They are as quiet on that body as on a 7DII or a T6i/T6s. Of course, the T1i remained a 15Mp body and the results from the lens were limited by that, but the lens itself worked perfectly on that older body.

That's the point of the EF and EF-S lens mounts - the instructions from the camera body to the lens ("focus that way!"; "open the diaphragm!") are all electronic. How the lens implements that instruction are entirely the lens' business and will be determined by the technology in the lens, so an STM lens will work on the oldest bodies, and a basic micro-motor (non USM, non-STM) lens will work on the newest. Canon got a lot of criticism in 1987 because the new mount rendered all their old lenses and bodies incompatible, but it was a good decision.

You would definitely notice the much quieter and faster autofocus of the newer STM lenses on your T2i, not to mention the improved image quality. I know my girlfriend did with her old T2i and the EF-S 55-250 STM.

You'd be missing out only on silent live view focusing (which I believe requires hybrid or dual pixel AF).

Yes, it works great! Much faster and very quiet. It's a huge upgrade for less than $100. I highly recommend it.
