Where is the Canon EF 200-600mm f/4.5-5.6 IS? :-/

Several rumors about this lens in the past few months, some suggested that the lens was being tested, some that it was going to be announced in Photokina.   Canon Rumors  just released the "Confirmation of Upcoming Product Announcements".  No Canon 200-600    Canon Rumors seems the most reliable of these sites, somebody fooled them or this lens is still coming in the near future?

The lens made total sense not only considering the newer Sigma 150-600 Contemporary, and the Sigma Sports but also the older Tamron, they are all great options for wildlife photographers who are not willing to pay over $10K for a lens, specially for a type of photography that most likely will not bring you any considerable income to compensate for the investment.

Furthermore, Nikon came up with its own version a 200-500 5.6, and with a camera body  (the D500) that for now is ahead of the Canon 7D Mark II.  This makes me think that the lens will be produced if Canon wants to keep this segment interested in the brand, when is it going to be produced though?

Only Canon knows and Canon will not say anything about possible future products.

Would be a nice pairing with the 7d2, 320mm - 960mm at f5.6 with the crop body.

It was only ever a rumor.

When they have a new lens, Canon will make an announcement and when it is scheduled to be available.  If you want need a xxx-500 or -600 zoom now, there are several available.  I would not hold off waiting on a rumor.

IMHO, YMMV.

It was only a patent

Not all patents turn into products - some patents are filled well ahead of products to ensure freedom to operate - so a product may not be just around the corner

And then there is the 28-560 mm patent:

the year is half over.

200-600 not to interested in, but the 28-560 that would be a 20x, sounds like a real beauty, count me in , when did you say that was coming out??? (Ha Ha)

It's no longer the equipment you use that will make you a better photographer, it's the person you look at in the mirror every day.

You do have to wonder at the trade-offs on 28-560 with that broad a range.  My preference would be a high quality 200-600 OR a 200-600 with an integrated 1.4x.  Can we say $15k?  I am sure it would also be very big and heavy.

The lens has just received another vapourware update

Seriously though I would hope for an EF 500 f5.6 L IS as an update/upgrade to the old 400f5.6L, it would be lighter and take a 1.4 extender better than a 200-600mm

There was never a product announcement, just rumors based on a patent filing.  Until Canon - and nobody else - makes an announcement, it's still just a rumor.

CR recently stated this lens was pushed until late 2017 at the earliest. Not sure where it was but you can search the site and I'm sure you'll find it.

Eventually the rumor sites will get it right...or not

Canon has certainly clamped down on leaks recently. They always get it right in the end though. That's the thing about development , things change.

That's my point - eventually they'll guess correctly.  As they say, even a stopped clock is correct twice a day

Completely agree, I doubt Canon would make a lens that would compromise the sales of their super expensive 400 and 500 primes, I would take a 500 5.6 IS or even a 400 5.6 IS anytime over any zoom.

Looks very interesting.  Wonder how it compares to Canon's original 100-400?  The new version is a little out of my budget, but this one might be a worthy upgrade.

I was considering the Sigma Sport version.  A shootout between the more expensive Sigma and the new Tamron will be most enlightening.

Ok, marketing is part of my work but I don't understand Canon and all the others.

Looking for a tele(zoom) for wildlife?

And no vague international web-shop with texts written by a drunk Chinese translator.

Then we pay 1000, around 1500, 2000. That's ok but after that: 7000 Euro or more. There is nothing in between.

Only the Sigma 120-300 f2.8 (too short) and very recently the Sigma 500 prime (no IS and 3 kg), costing 4500 Euros.

For the more than enthousiastic wildlife shooter the only option besides the 100-400 II is the 400 DO II.

Why do we have to wait 30 years for a 400 f5.6 L II or a 500 f5.6/f6.3?

This new 200-600 lens sounds great but it is not an 'L' lens. Robustness and weather sealing is what you need when shooting outdoors for days.
