I guess I'm still having second thoughts on the lenses setup

Apologies for reviving this old thread, but I just read through it and now I'm curious with which lenses you came home with.

Reason I found this discussion is because I was considering to buy the Oly 75-300, which I did with the current cashback action. My other MFT lenses are Panasonic 12-35/35-100 2.8, the mentioned Rokinon 7.5 fisheye and for traveling light I have the Olympus 14-42 pancake. Body is E-M5.

The OP did move from Nikon DSLR, but he moved to Fuji X!

Blame it on the lack of a good 35mm EFL prime, which is important to the OP and I think many others. The 15mm comes closest to that requirement, but is hard to justify, as it is not special in IQ, but expensive, and has, annoyingly for Olympus users, a crippled aperture ring.

If the OP wanted a budget system, then Fuji X just isn't a good choice. Their 23mm f/2.0 lens isn't very much cheaper than the Olympus 17mm f/1.8 lens.

If the OP wanted a good selection of prime lenses, then Fuji X isn't a bad choice, but M4/3 has more than twice as many. According to the Dpreview lens database, Fuji X has 20 prime lenses, while M4/3 has 41 of them.

Of course, he should buy whatever he wants. It just is hard to blame M4/3 for being too expensive or not having enough prime lens options.

It depends on this case on how important it is to have a good 35mm EFL prime lens. The Fuji 23mm is really nice, being small, sharp and weather proof. In fact, it's not just this 35mm EFL, but also other wide angle primes that make M43 unattractive. They are either expensive, of limited quality, have AF issues, and/or simply non-existent (under 24mm EFL) from either manufacturers. So, in general, anyone who likes shooting with wide angle primes, beware.

Quantity does not equal quality. You are right though, there are many primes for M43, but how many are really good in the WA range? One and a half at most, and out of them, how many are reasonably priced considering quality and features? None.

(The "half" is 15mm prime, and the other "one" is the PL12mm f/1.4, assuming everything checks out fine in reviews.)

Well, maybe in these days of super expensive lenses, $1300 USD is not considered so expensive for a quality 24mm EFL M43 lens. However the Fuji equivalent is cheaper.

Re: According to his gear list...

That's disappointing to hear about the OP. I don't know anything about the Fuji system and I don't need to know. MFT is also the format of my cinema camera by Blackmagic.

I was just curious what the OP had chosen in the end and how he felt about that choice now. I haven't invested in prime lenses yet, except the 7.5 fisheye. On hindsight a rectilinear wide angle would have been a better choice, but as stated above those lenses are quite expensive.

Thanks to to all who have contributed in this discussion. It was learnsome to read.
