Exaclty!

To the OP, if you mean 35mm in film, then yes, 17mm is the closest. If you meant 35mm prime was the prime of choice with the Nikon DX format, than rsmithgi is correct and what you should be looking at are the various 25mm lenses.

I meant the former, you stand correct on your first assumption -- sorry, my phrase construction feels a little bit rusty sometimes.

I shot several photos today, and my favorite was taken with the Oly 9-18mm at 9mm setting. That lens is on my camera most of the time.

I've just saw her at Oly site, very nice girl. I love to shoot wide, but have never tried that wide.

Can I shoot 16:9? I'd love to try. Infinite possibilities

BUT, for 700 USD, I'll have to drop my Geforce GTX 1080

You are moving to Olympus (not "M4/3") - right?

Guilty as charged - My first post here says it all, if you're curious on how it happened.

Take it easy no need to get a full kit overnight. Besides Panasonic make good gear as well.

I have no doubt about it -- I loved the panaleicas!

Perhaps Panasonic should have acquired the rights to Exakta - that venerable old name might have sounded sweeter

Don't even get me started! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the 1st gen KINE!

Good luck with your decision.

I guess I won't have time for it, I'll have all gear delivered to my hotel, so I can start shooting the day I arrive!

For me, I use the 14-150 II more than the 12-40 and 75-300. The 14-150 II is just a great lens IMO. I think combined with a fast prime(OLY 17mm) for indoors and you will have your bases covered.

Yes, the Olympus Travel Kit has the 14-150 II + 17mm 1.8 + Hoods + pouches for 800 USD. I guess it's a fair price, specially now that the 40-150 rose to 200 USD again.

14-150 II = $600; 17/1.8 = $400.  You're getting $200 off (not including the hoods + pouches).  That's indeed a fair deal.  Plus you said you get warranty from Olympus Brazil which makes it a even better deal (when compared to Pany).

You could even look at the 9-18 to go with it for a very nice, light weight kit.

She's so small! I've never noticed this lens before! How's the IQ?

I have one which I use quite a bit when traveling.  The IQ is very good and the range is very useful - UWA to wide.  However, I won't pay full price.  I got mine from Olympus Outlet @USD400.

Don't get me wrong, the 12-40 Pro is an outstanding lens, and fairly fast at 2.8. It just comes down to money and what focal lengths you want covered.

Thanks, I don't get you wrong, don't worry! I'm having second thoughts based on all your opinions. Maybe the 14-150 + 2 primes, 17 and 45?

The 45 and 25/1.8 are both @USD299.  If you're getting the 17, then the 45 gives you a better separation of FL.  Howver, to me, the 25's IQ is noticeably better than the 45's.  I have both

I would not get hung up on overlapping focal lengths. The 12-40 or the 14-150 is really for a specific need as is the 17mm prime.

Yes, there are more to consider beyond the numbers!

I have the Voightlander Noctons specifically for night use even though they overlap many of my lenses. And yes, I highly recommend the PL 100-400, it is an excellent lens and well worth saving your money for.

TY again for your patience, Bruce,

The Rokinon 7.5mm is a very nice lens for the price. The Olympus 9-18mm also has nice quality and is very versatile.

Here is a shot from the Rokinon 7.5mm and Pen-F the other evening:

You can defish if you want, there are lots of fun uses for this lens. If you get the Rokinon, get it in black, the silver paint scratches easily.

Just to add to the fun.... Don't forget the Sigma trio of primes available in 19, 30, and 60mm focal lengths. All are f2.8 primes and are rather well regarded especially considering their price - around $200 USD  each.

When you have so many choices, choosing can be very difficult.

Yeah, the retail price is kind of a dealbreaker. I've found a Rokinon for 245 USD. Maybe a better deal?

The 25 f1.7 is a recent cheaper panasonic lens that sold for as low as 99$. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1182677-REG/panasonic_h_h025k_25mm_f_1_7_lens_for.html

Yes, my most used lens is the 25 f1.4 by quite a margin. Next is the 14mm.

I would find the 45mm too narrow for my style of street shooting but some people prefer to shoot from a distance.

The 12-40 can definitely work as an everyday lens, or even as the only lens one could ever need. I think primes make me progress more as a photographer even if I miss a few shots by not having the convenience of a normal zoom.

Agreed - I like up close and personal

The 12-40 can definitely work as an everyday lens, or even as the only lens one could ever need.

That's what I'm planning - I'll shoot most of my trip with the 12-40, and use a prime for the night shooting - I just have to decide which prime

I think primes make me progress more as a photographer even if I miss a few shots by not having the convenience of a normal zoom.

Agreed!

Apologies for reviving this old thread, but I just read through it and now I'm curious with which lenses you came home with.

Reason I found this discussion is because I was considering to buy the Oly 75-300, which I did with the current cashback action. My other MFT lenses are Panasonic 12-35/35-100 2.8, the mentioned Rokinon 7.5 fisheye and for traveling light I have the Olympus 14-42 pancake. Body is E-M5.

Blame it on the lack of a good 35mm EFL prime, which is important to the OP and I think many others.  The 15mm comes closest to that requirement, but is hard to justify, as it is not special in IQ, but expensive, and has, annoyingly for Olympus users, a crippled aperture ring.

If the OP wanted a budget system, then Fuji X just isn't a good choice. Their 23mm f/2.0 lens isn't very much cheaper than the Olympus 17mm f/1.8 lens.

If the OP wanted a good selection of prime lenses, then Fuji X isn't a bad choice, but M4/3 has more than twice as many. According to the Dpreview lens database, Fuji X has 20 prime lenses, while M4/3 has 41 of them.

Of course, he should buy whatever he wants. It just is hard to blame M4/3 for being too expensive or not having enough prime lens options.
