Canon G12 - Exposure 'lock' has stopped working
Aug 17, 2016
I posted this in the Beginners forum yesterday, and got some helpful replies, but that thread now seems to have 'ended', so I'm trying again here. I've copied the replies so far below my question:-
Whilst my technical knowledge on digital photography is extremely limited, I have always used the technique of half depressing the shutter to lock the exposure / focus, before reframing (with the shutter still half depressed) and then fully depressing the shutter to take my shot. (Sorry, I don't know what this is called...!). I am using a Canon G12.
A couple of weeks ago, this technique suddenly stopped working. I can still half depress my shutter and hear a bleep, but as I move the framing, the exposure alters like it is in automatic mode. It doesn't stay locked as it did before.
I am shooting in "P" (obviously!).
At first, I wondered it the camera had broken in some way, but actually a much more likely explanation is that I have inadvertently knocked one of the many buttons on the G12 which I don't know what they do(!), and thus somehow turned off that functionality.
Please can anyone give me some pointers which might help me get it back....?
Many thanks in advance.
Neil
Replies to original thread:-
I would ask this in the Canon powershot forum.
Are you in servo AF? The camera autofocuses and sets exposure continuously in that mode. You need to go into the menus to turn it off.
You can turn off Servo AF off in the Shooting Menu - the one with the camera icon. Also dealt with on p94 of the manual.
If it is already set to "Off", come back here and tell us and we will have another think.
You could also try doing a reset of all menu settings to "factory default".
And a last reply from me:-
Thank you for the replies.
The servo AF suggestion definitely sounds promising. I've found the entry in the 'camera' menu, but it is greyed out. When I scroll down that menu it jumps past that option (and the next Continuous AF option - both are greyed out).
So I think I may well have inadvertently turned Servo AF on (though I can't be certain as it is difficult to tell when the option is greyed out), but I can't see how to activate the option to turn it off.
Any more suggestion, please.....?
