Largest capacity memory card that I can use

Hi, I have an old EOS Rebel 300D that hasn't been used in years & was wondering what the largest capacity compact flash II card that can be used with the camera? I have an 1GB & 512MB cards, that both work, but wanted to try a 16gb or 32gb card. I'll need new batteries also as mine want hold a charge.

Also the black plastic on the body has become sticky and black comes off on my hands. Any idea how to clean the sticky off without damaging the plastic?

Thanks.

According to the dpReview specs page the Digital Rebel (300D) supports the FAT 32 format so your camera should be good to 512GB. There was a lot of forward planning/future proofing done when the Compact Flash spec was originally written especially compared to the SD card spec which has had to be revised twice to cope with ever expanding memory size.

A lot of people seem to like SterlingTEK batteries and a pair of BP511's are available from Amazon.com for $24.99 which should get you going.

Also the black plastic on the body has become sticky and black comes off on my hands. Any idea how to clean the sticky off without damaging the plastic?

Thanks.

I've had this happen a couple of times (a camera and a mouse to be exact) and have found rubbing with a tissue soaked in isopropyl alcohol (do not spray/pour it on the camera just use wetted tissue/cloth) eventually does the job but it does take a lot of elbow grease.

Hope this helps

Ian

IIRC the 300D is fully compatible with FAT16 (up to 2 GB).

It can also read/write FAT32 (up to 8 GB), but it will be slower.  I believe it has something to do with Cluster size.  Beyond 8 GB (FAT 32), I'm not sure.

You would need to format the card in the computer for anything above 2 GB.  If you format in-camera, then you might be limited to 2 GB?  Any Rebel owners chime in?

There are utilities that can format volumes larger than 2 GB (FAT 16), or 8 GB/32 GB (FAT 32).  Do a Google search.  I have one that will format FAT 32 beyond 2 TB.  Very handy for use in older devices that do not support exFAT (like some MP3 players).

FAT 32 format utility that I like.

You also might be able to speed up read/write times by playing with the Cluster size (FAT 32).  32 KB?  64 KB?

I'll need new batteries also as mine want hold a charge.

Folks have had great luck with Wasabi batteries.

Yup, try Isopropyl alcohol (but be sure not to use "rubbing alcohol").

Good luck!

ps. If there's any way you can find a newer camera (for very low $$), then you can use the great bang-for-the-buck EF-S lenses!

Actually the OP can use EF-S lenses as the Digital Rebel/300D was the first camera body to utilise the EF-S lens mount. To quote the review of the Digital Rebel/300D here on dpReview:-

"the EOS 300D is the first Canon digital SLR to support a new lens called the EF-S (S = short back focus), this has the same mount and electrical contacts as an EF lens but has a rear element which fits further into the camera allowing it to be closer to the image sensor."

Hey thanks for that info (apologize to the OP). I must have been thinking of the 10D (not being compatible).
