Shooting the Perseids

I'm a long time D300s/D200/D100 shooter, and I finally got a D500 last night. So far I've only charged the battery, set the date & time, made a few test shots and realized that there's a lot to learn.

I'd like to go out and try to see some of the Perseid meteors tonight, and maybe get a photo or two. Since I haven't managed to make it through much of the manual yet, can anyone give me some hints on camera settings that would be good for shooting meteors? I've done very little astrophotography (a few shots of the moon that I like...) so I'm not very familiar with what best practices are.

Normally I'd research and experiment, but those pesky meteors won't wait around for that

Thanks in advance for any tips!

Congrats on your new camera.

On the astro photography forum here on dpreview there's been a lot of talk about the meteor shower.

Go check it out see if there's any food for thought.

I wish I was on dry land and had the opportunity to experience it.

I have not done it myself, but how about checking those tips from the American Meteor Society:

Wonder if they are related to the astro-zoologists of the discworld.
