Mac alternative to DSS?

Hi all,

I went to download DSS only to discover that there is no OS X client. Is there a Mac alternative to DSS? I have Helicon Focus, but I (think) it's mostly for macro focus stacking, etc.

Thanks...

Hello. You can get Lynkeos for free. I have used it for several years. It is fairly easy to use and has some decent post processing tools as well. The help file (online) are fairly good and there may be some online tutorials available.

I also installed Parallels Desktop to have Windows run on my iMac. It gives me access to all the Windows apps. I am using Windows 7. I still prefer the OSX apps.

Good luck and enjoy the Perseids this weekend, if visible where you live.

Fivel.

Alternatively, you can also use DeepSkyStacker in OSX.

Here is a guide which is still relevant today. If you have any difficulty, I could also share the compiled version for OSX Yosemite.

I use Nebulosity too, but it costs $$$ and it is not automatic like DSS. I also use Boot Camp on my Mac Mini with Windows 10 installed so I can run Windows apps. But mostly I use Nebulosity on my MacBook Pro.

Well, after reading Tom's blog post, I downloaded Wine, DSS, etc... it appears that OS X El Capitan is incompatible with Wineskin. There are a few workarounds, like running rootless, updating the Wrapper version (I downloaded the latest) and I'm still unable to install DSS.

I downloaded Nebulosity and based on the UI (and the price), I won't be touching it. Maybe I'm too spoiled by Helicon Focus -- drag subs onto window, click render, done.

Lynkeos... almost nearly as obtuse as Nebulosity, and seemingly only deals with (or specializes in) planetary and eclipse imaging. Still, I went ahead, gave the quick guide a read, added images to the list, aligned, then processed a stack -- et voila, don't know how I did it, but I ended up with a stacked image! And it looks good!

I'll definitely need to play with Lynkeos more, the various options etc. Still, it looks like a temporary to permanent solution.

Thanks again for everyone's input.

Pixinsight is what I use on OSX. Well supported and lots of tutorials. Excellent image processing software.

I will definitely need to dig into the tutorials on this one. Seems to be a very, very deep program!

I was just about to suggest the same.   I only discovered regim last night, looks very promising.  It is pure Java so should run everywhere you find a Java VM.

Hi swartzfeger,

If you could pm me your email address, I could send you a pre-compiled DSS 3.3.4 with Wineskin. I compiled it under El Capitan and it works on Sierra too.

Cheers,
Robin.
