I'm starting to be a bit fed up with Samsung gear quality...

Oh my god! I'll have to take my NX1 to Samsung Service... AGAIN! (Although I'll wait till September as I have some holidays pending in August).

My current issues (thanks otto k and vasile, as your telnet trick, and any of the scripts which inform about pressed keys, have been really useful for a complete diagnosis):

  • The NEW one. The rear wheel (Custom Wheel) has just stopped working. (Actually while browsing my taken pictures). No key signal when turning it either clock- or counter-clockwise.
  • My A position in the PASM dial sometimes fails: it has a faulty/loose connection somewhere. Sometimes it does not give the "F8" key signal. I've been living with it for a while...

But in the past I have also suffered:

  • My top dials went completely FUBAR. At the beginning I thought it was something wrong I had made within a FW update but, no, it was something wrong within the top plate (or something like that)... (Whole story here, not really interesting at all ). Repair covered by warranty.
  • I received a faulty brand new 50-150S lens (and BTW I suffered a horrible experience with a German shop). And no, it wasn't a grey-market product. It was a brand new fully legal and official product bought in a (supposedly) fully serious and trusty professional shop. Whole story here, not really interesting at all.

And I'm not the only one. Two other recent examples (just to name a couple):

Too many issues under normal usage. And I swear I don't use my NX1 as a hammer... And I also swear I've never ever suffered an issue with my former Canon 450D, 7D, EF-S 17-55...

Hopefully, I'm still covered by the European 2 year warranty. But this is NOT serious.

(Sorry Samsung, I suppose it's irrelevant now you've left the market through the back door, but you cannot expect wining the pro-market respect with such CRAP products... You know, good gear is something more than high specs which you undeniably fulfill. Reliability is a KEY factor you just DON'T KNOW even how to approach).

Is this reflective of other nx1 owners? I haven't heard of that many issues with the nx1, maybe you've just been unlucky?

I noticed my top dial doesn't always match actual mode.   but a quick turn back and forth  fixes it

shutter button hangs sometimes too. annoying when shooting  sports.

otherwise awesome camera !

It seems like the top modes dial is a common problem, I had it with my NX300 after 8 months of purchase (new), and NX500 (almost instantly!), but I just go back and forth and they work, nothing to really worry about,NX300 is 25-30 months old and NX500 9 months. NX1 is still ok (7 months) and I hope it stays that way!

Sorry to hear you have had so many issues. I've been very happy with my Samsung camera and lens quality. The single issue I did have was with a NX Mini lens, but in all honesty I beat the crap out of that camera setup on a Hawaii trip. Probably abuse abuse related, which is not typical of how I normally use my gear. Wrong camera for the way I was using it. I Should have had a "tough" point and shoot.

No problems here with my NX500 and NX1. Although I am always gentle with all my electronics. I use the minimum amount of pressure needed to turn dials, push buttons, etc. Never had any issues with any electronics nor cameras. You should see some of the photographers in my local photography group. Some of them really are hard on their equipment, which is no wonder people have issues.

I am babying my NX1... so I haven't had problems so far.

I do get the occasional hangs though... the camera locks up... solved by  pulling the battery.  Doesn't seem to damage the shot footage.  But I am assuming it is caused by the high bitrate Hack.

Wear and tear will take its toll, though.  My 5 year old workhorse the GH2 just lost the rubber eyepiece, though the dials and other mechanical parts seem to be holding up.

I hope the NX1 will last at least as long.

I think my biggest concern is the shutter giving up at some point.

If this happens would the camera be repairable? I've no idea when it comes to these sort of things!

The two "other examples" you cited are pretty clearly related to some sort of impact damage, not inferior quality. They are low end lenses made from plastic, and those sorts of things will fracture.

I have had lower end Canon lenses that have literally wobbled on the zoom shaft. My Nikon P900 creaks when you move your hand.  If you buy cheaper products you can't expect too much. Buttons and such fall off Canon cameras as well.

Most instances of gross mechanical failure in these sorts of products is due to user mistreatment rather than an actual manufacturing defect. When it happens repeatedly, it is usually to the same people.

I would look into other brands for mirrorless cameras as they still have continuing support.  Since Samsung pulled out of the camera market, it's just a crapshoot if it needs servicing.  I probably would've never invested in my nx30 if I had known samsung was going to do this

Just search in google: "Brand name camera problems" you will have the same number of angry user with each brand's quality controls.

In my oppinion there shall be better brand but not by a large distant.

Samsung has taken note of your concerns (such service!) and ceased production on the NX system as a whole so that no others will have to experience the same frustration.

Left at Samsung Service...

... and then traveling to UK.

My estimation: one month without camera...

BTW, I was tempted to leave it modded with nx-on-wake/-patch but I decided not taking risks and re-flashed FW 1.41... I don't want any excuses to void my warranty, even being clearly physical hardware issues not related with modding.

I've had new Canon L-glass fall apart

Just so you know, all the brands have a percentage of faulty items. I had a two month old Canon 100-400L detach an inner element. And I handled the lens like a fragile flower. I've also had a Canon 35/2 severely misfocusing straight out of the box. Just to name a few incidents. It sucks, but it happens. Hope you get your gear back soon as possible.

Re: I'm starting to be a bit fed up with Samsung gear quality...

I have 2 NX500s, 2 NX1s, and every lens Samsung released (in some cases 2 of each). Number of problems: 0. Problems happen with all brands and you'll find horror stores with every single one if you go looking. Sometimes you are just unlucky.

As to that 12-24 story: this is one lens that had numerous issues early because it was initially released with a plastic mount. They later replaced it with metal and the number of issues dropped significantly. If I were looking for one of those used I'd check it out carefully.

Bad luck... but it's MY bad luck

Yes. Quite possible you all are right. Mine is just a case of bad luck and that's all.

But in my personal statistics, Samsung is just horrible. No way I would buy Samsung gear again (if it were possible, which doesn't sadly seem quite probable anyway), unless there's no other possible and comparable gear against them.

Sure, bad luck, but it's been MY bad luck and therefore I'm not convinced it's only bad luck in any way.

FYI...personal statistics may affect your purchasing but they aren't complete statistics-only part of a much larger whole. And the much larger whole says you've had bad luck or treat your gear like crap. Maybe the camera is just angry at you for hacking it. Here's a personal statistic for you: number of times I've hacked my NX cameras: 0. Number of issues I've had with my gear: 0. There have been reports of other NX owners having issues after having hacked the cam. Therefore my conclusion has to be: hacking can damage the camera.

If I were you I'd go buy some other brand. And I'll watch that brand forum to see if it was the gear or you.

My camera is back

Exactly three weeks later, my camera is back fully fixed again.

Let's hope this is the last time I need to send it to Samsung Service.
