Olympus ep5, cannot edit images in camera

When I try to edit a picture in the camera I get a sign that says The image cannot be edited. This holds good for every pic on the memory card. I thought that the pictures were protected so I pressed the Reset Protect button and Yes, which should delete every protection of the images. That did not help. I swapped the memory card for an older card taken with the same camera. The same thing happened, all images were protected from editing. Where is the fault, what should I do? Lars-Eric Häggman

Hmmmm, I've never seen that happen.

Steps I would try......

  1. Format a card in camera and try again with some fresh shots.
  2. Try basic or full Reset of the camera, but note your settings first.
  3. Talk to Olympus, if you can find someone who knows what they are talking about.

Also I guess try jpeg only, raw only, and raw+jpeg to see if the situation is bad in all cases.

Are you trying to edit jpg images?  I believe that you can only edit raw images.

Jpegs are OK

shiwen wrote:

When you try to edit you get the choice of edit the raw or edit the jpeg, if you take jpeg only then of course you only get to edit the jpeg. Shadow Adjust, Redeye Fix, Crop, Aspect Ratio, Black & White, Sepia, Saturation, Reduce Size, e-Portrait all appear as options for jpegs.

Also check that SD-cards are not locked. Obviously, if you can record images, this should not be an issue. I have some cards where the locking system has become loose, and the card gets locked 90% when I insert to camera or SD-reader, no matter how I do it...

If there are pictures on the card that are taken with different camera, it's no wonder that you cannot edit them. So try 1. from Guy Parsons list.

It depends on what was shot but in any case yes you can edit both RAW and JPG images in camera.

If RAW+JPG was shot you have a choice of "RAW Data Edit" and "JPG Edit"
If JPG only was shot "JPG Edit" is available.
If RAW only is shot no JPG will exist to edit.

If the SD card write protect switch is on it will be obvious as a large warning symbol and "Write Protect" is displayed and no shooting or editing is possible.

This silly error msg comes if you try to edit jpgs in camera which are not shot at 4:3 ratio. It won't let you crop them or change the aspect ratio. Other jpg editing features are permitted. If you want to do these types of edits in camera, you have to shoot in 4:3 ratio.

Re: Olympus ep5, cannot edit images in camera

Thanks to all of you for the good advice I got! It really is like biggles wrote, if the size of the photo is 4:3 you can crop it, but not with the other sizes. I had not tried the other editing alternatives because I wanted to enlarge an insect that I intended to print with my Canon cp 800 dyesublimation printer. I always use 3:2 for the workflow and to have the same frame size as with my SLRs. Also to fill the paper,10x15cm, that cp800 uses. I really recommend this printer, no ink that dries, easy use, supposedly long lifetime for the prints. I use this printer to now and then make prints for my albums to have something left when harddisks and computers have crashed.

Yes, dumb me did not see the "cannot edit" message until I later switched to 3:2 to try a shot to be edited. I only saw what happened with 4:3 and in fact have never used in-camera edit at all for anything before.

Yup, have a bunch of those little beauties. Sadly Canon force you to buy a new printer each time Windows upgrades, Canon do not provide printer drivers forever for anything. Luckily the ribbons and paper work on all models.

When I was doing a lot of home printing I did the fade test to see how long prints would last. Forget the early dye inks, they fade in five minutes, especially if you do not use same brand paper with same brand ink. Pigment is better but oh the clog problems seemed to use up way more ink than actual printing.

The little Canon dye-sub (Selphy line) prints seem to last forever, I left one print half covered near a window for close to a year getting direct sun though the glass and the exposed part only changed a little, so the 100 years claim (if stored carefully in acid free album) would easily be achieved.

For my wife's family research efforts we scan the old faded shots, restore colours or the B&W or sepia look so they look fresh then reprint on the Canon to get another 100 years out of them. I use Qimage Ultimate for all printing and it does make a difference compared to most other edit programs print output.

Hi, I was planning to get a little Selphy portable printer to take with me when travelling to Asia sometime next year, to give out photos to some people I've taken portraits of. However I was concerned about how long the photos would last for. Are you saying that the Canon portables with the Selphy brand will all have this good long life for prints?

I would have never guessed this to be an aspect issue.
Then again I nearly always shoot native aspect, and when I edit in camera I'm using the RAW of the RAW+JPG.

HP seems to have a similar 'planned obsolescence' driver model.

Very long life, the months-in-the-sun test proved that for me. The prints will way outlast me, but that's not saying much as I'm nearly there already....

I've thought about taking the Selphy just to make customised postcards to send home, but hey, that's just more junk to carry and waste time with making the prints. A crappy blog is all I did last time (on this small screen netbook)  for the Ireland+UK trip to keep friends and relatives happy.

Usually in Asia people are happy if you just show them on the camera what you took. But nowadays they would probably also want you to transfer the image to their smart-phones.

It's actually some remote parts of Indonesia so I think prints will be valued. But in some places they have cell coverage and will have phones.

What would be the easiest way of transferring photos from an Oly or Pana camera to their phones? That's an interesting side question.

If they happen to be some strict sect of Muslims then photography will be forbidden anyway, just be careful.

From https://islamqa.info/en/365 "'Abdullaah ibn Mas'ood (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Those who will be most severely punished by Allaah on the Day of Resurrection will be the image-makers." (Reported by al-Bukhaari, see al-Fath, 10/382)."

As an atheist I find that all weird but that's the rules for some out there. Basically it appears that we are all doomed.

As a non smart-phone owner (in fact no cell-phone at all)  I have no idea.

Hi, thanks, it's OK, I've lived there before and there aren't any problems. It's not a strict area anyway. Only time I had someone cross was when I took a photo while they were cleaning up from a natural flood disaster (it probably had put them in a bad mood and also it might have felt like disaster tourism).

I know how to transfer photos between phones, but I hardly ever do it, so I was wondering if there was a faster and more efficient procedure to handle doing it more often. I'll think about it. But I expect I'll have to just upload the photo to my phone and find the best way to send it over. NFC should work, but can be fiddly, and may not suit all phones.
