I have a cousin who, whilst holidaying in Harlech North-West Wales, left her camera behind after resting up. It was not to be seen again, and so would I research a second hand camera for her, preferably with an articulated LCD and viewfinder.

I came across a couple of Canon A650’s at a fair price, but on further research spotted the Samsung EX2f in excellent condition, with case, 4Gb SDHC, auto lens cap and charger on eBay for £150, postage paid. Tell me if I am wrong, but that seemed ludicrously cheap as Amazon UK had a couple second-hand at £429 and £499 (+ postage).

Needless to say, I stepped in and bought it to trial and post some sample results for my cousin to peruse. The fact that it does not have an integral viewfinder may give me some hope that I might be keeping it for myself if the viewfinder is a prerequisite.

Anyway, I set it up with my usual parameters AP; ISO 80; Sat, Contrast and sharpness back one notch, and sallied forth to garner some results from one or two local attractions, and thought to post them here – a favourite haunt of mine from many moons ago when I was the proud owner of the EX1.

Images processed in Oloneo PhotoEngine, and finalised in Corel’s PSPX8.

Best regards to all on the Samsung forum

Keith

Nice shots. I got mine from Ebay too. It was going for £150 or best offer. I offered £130 expecting a counter offer but instead it was accepted. I was expecting to regret the purchase but have been pleasantly surprised. It has a few odd quirks but overall is a well rounded camera with a great lens and pretty capable sensor for its size. I prefer a tilt screen to fully articulated but it's not that big a deal. I got mine predominantly for street shooting and it has proved very capable and in the right light it fares very well compared to my APS-C cameras which is amazing considering the difference in sensor size. People should not be so quick to dismiss small sensor cameras. Try getting a similar spec zoom on an APS-C camera and see how much it costs and weighs!

Enjoy your camera..

Small sensor cameras certainly have their place. My RX100M2 is fabulous!

Hi Keith, it's been a long time since our SX50 days. (By the way, Hossam did contact me, but then we lost track again.) It's good to see you and your wonderful images here on the Samsung forum. (No, I was not surprised to see the major stitching job as the last image.)

A lot of people like that camera, so I think you may just have found one your cousin will really like as well. But if not and you keep it, it'll be good to continue to see what you can do with it and posting here.

Re: It’s like this: -

Many thanks Norman, Kinger and Ed for commenting. And yes Norman, you had a bargain indeed.

I have been asked before to research cameras for acquaintances, and subject to their needs and not in a hurry, have suggested they tune in to see if there is a Samsung EX1 or EX2 available because they only pop up occasionally. I’ve often quoted someone else from this forum that if the EX1 or EX2 was dropped, it could seriously damage the floor!

As time and a half goes by, we move on to other makes and models, and in that regard, I have no brand loyalty and it is usual for me to part with one camera to help finance the next. I have to say though that it has since pained me not having kept the EX1.

But (and this is one for Ed), I do still have the Canon SX50 which I regard as my ‘most fun’ camera of all time!

Currently though, my main camera is the Panasonic FZ1000 despite struggling sometimes with the way it reproduces the colour of grass! Yes – I’ve seen it on other people’s results too – fields of grass with a neon glow in the shade of lime green!  (For which, image processing software is my friend.) In comparison, I find Samsung colours are very nicely balanced indeed. (Obviously, I'm expressing a personal view).

Regards

Keith

Totally agree with you there, Keith. Although 95% of the time I'm using my NX1 and S lenses these days because I need Exhibition quality results (yes, I prefer the NX1 over my full frame Canons and L lenses), I still carry around my 'most fun' SX50 in my belt case at times. Here's an example from a couple of weeks ago showing its great versatility. It only took a few seconds to acquire and capture the handheld portrait of this little darter:

This is a quarter crop of a handheld SX50 image resized down to 1000x1000.

The full image can be found here: Dragonfly

Note that since Samsung failed to provide long glass for the NX series, I also carry the SX50 when I believe it will fulfill that purpose. That little 12mp sensor cleans up very nicely using Topaz plug-ins in Photoshop CC. I believe I'll always be using the SX50 and since there was enough demand, I actually taught an entire class last week on its use in the field. As you know, it's still a very popular camera.

Good grief Ed! That thing looks as if it should be kept on a lead at all times. Muzzled too I think.
