moving on, selling gear

As great as the system has been, I've decided to move on.

I've already sold my 50-150, but the rest (NX1, NX500, 85mm, etc.) is available over on the buy/sell forum and on fredmiranda.

Re: moving on, selling gear

I'm curious Tim. 2 months ago you had very high praise for the NX system, as seen here. My feelings are very similar to what you expressed in that excellent post. I tend to shoot mostly with 1" sensors (Nikon 1 & Sony RX) as I like the smaller system, but when I do shoot with my Samsung gear, I sure do love using it and its output.

So, what's changed your mind re: Samsung NX gear? What are you changing to?

I can't decide whether to sell some or buy more when the prices drop. I'll keep my eye on your sale should I decide to add to my lenses.

If you don't mind, how much did you sell the 50-150mm for?

Re: moving on, selling gear

Great question, and I've had a lot of angst about this one. I'm sure someone could argue me out of my reasons :-). I should be quick to say that for the price I still think the Samsung NX system is the best available right now.

But I essentially decided that for a system with no future, it was too expensive of a risk to keep.

It's partly because I just burned out a camera from overheating (not a Samsung), and that woke me up to the risk of having a camera fail.

It's partly just financial - I don't anticipate having funds anytime in the near future for extra gear. So since the opportunity to sell is fairly good right now, I decided I needed to make the move to have funds available for something else.

The last part of the story is the Panasonic GX85. When I made the move to Samsung, I switched from micro four thirds. I love mft. I made the switch right when they released the GX8 (I loved my GX7) and I remember thinking, "Oh, Panasonic, you almost kept me. But this GX8 is a little disappointing, and way too expensive."

But the GX85 potentially answers all of my frustrations with the GX8, it comes with one of my favorite mft lenses (12-32), Panasonic is offering 3-year warranties right now, and they've released that wonderful little 42.5 1.7 lens. So that's the direction I'm headed.

I netted $1110 after all fees and shipping costs.

If the Panasonic GX85 is good for you, then you did the right thing.

I personally don't like the 4:3 format of images (I'd have to crop to 2:3 thus loosing pixels) and in general I consider that specific camera inferior to NX1, even if quite good. The only part that I love is the rangefinder shape.

Nice. I've seen them selling for under $1000 so you did well.

I bought an NX500 first as a walk-around camera and also one for doing some stitching panos using a 50-150, which became unavailable right when I was going to pull the trigger on one.

Since Olympus introduced a 20mp MFT, that now becomes a very real option for my pano work, as the aspect ratio does not matter.  In addition, the camera+lens system is much more portable.= than other options.

I'm waiting for more people to drop their gear, so I can find a 50-150S for $800 or so. Until then, I bought the official Samsung K-Mount adapter, and picked up some used Pentax lenses in excellent condition for a bargain price! Got a Pentax 100mm, 135mm and 300mm. All manual focus of course, but i can deal with it, until Samsung 50-150 comes down in price. Also want to pick up a second NX1 too.

Re: moving on, selling gear

I used Samsung cameras over 14 years, I had been a Samsung Cameras fans since 2002.

My first samsung camera is 350se:

http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/samsung/digimax_350se-review/

and then Digimax V3, WB5000, NV8, NX10, NX20, NX500 with several NX and Samyang lenses.

I don't know why Samsung gives up the camera business, after the dead of NX system, I might decide move to Nikon Pro DX / FX.

Nikon D500 is the best APSC on high ISO quality, usable even on ISO 12800.

Full Frame D750 is also under my consideration.

Yes a very nice cam allround. 5axis in video (video that has no logs files but at the price it is oney). Very  nice 5a xis with Panny lenses even  a bit better than Oly's version. Good IQ in stills and video, Much smalller than my GH4. I think a great, light and small choice. AF is also far superior to GX7 for action. What isnot to like?

Unless I am missing something (and it is very possible I am), I haven't seen any 50-150 go under 1000 for at least as much as I remember, I am cheking regularly the usual routes (B&H, Amazon, Ebay).

Even the 16-50 S,which is a much less expensive lens, I can not find it under 800€(not $, but euros) used.

Both lenses are well worth those prices. One could have an outstanding NX1 + S + S for under 2500$, which is an incredible deal, considering the cost of cameras like D500, 7D-ii, X-T2 and such.

I bought a used 16-50 S for a few dollars less than $750 and passed on a 50-150 for $950 because I already had one and couldn't justify a second for a dead system.  I know there have been a one or 2 sold on FM for $1000 or just under but those sales were a couple of months ago. Not that big of a difference from your price and they may be getting harder to find so people might be willing to pay more.

Thanks for taking the time to explain Tim. Your reasons make good sense as I've had some worries about what should happen if something were to die, especially one of the bodies. Hopefully I'll be able to find used gear if needed if that were to happen.

Unless all the nx1 have a 'killing switch' at some point in time, I see it very likely to find a replacement for the time being, in case your item stops working.

I'd even suppose that you could have your camera repaired by some samsung center for several years to come, like it happens for fridges and washing machines.

I personally can't see a reason to switch to an inferior system, for this fear. Ymmv of course.
