"Best" Complement to 24STM for Light Travel

For a do-it-most travel kit when wanted to keep it really light and no major wildlife duty which would you say would "best" complement the 24mm STM pancake lens on a crop sensor - 50 1.8 STM, 60mm macro or 85 1.8?  2.8 is usually enough in most cases and a main job for the longer lens would be for nice people shots.

Depends where you are traveling. I was in Europe last year and the 10-18 zoom was very helpful for urban architectural shots. The 50mm f1.8 is good for indoor shots or face shots. The 18-55 kit zoom may be the most versatile. All of the foregoing lenses are light.

The 85mm f1.8 would be a good choice. You might want to bring 3 primes? They are so light, and they give good quality.

I would almost say to take the 10-18+35mm f2+85mm f1.8 - thats just my personal opinion, for me I think that would cover the main things I need. Either that, or replace the 85mm f1.8 with the 60mm macro if you want good flower shots or something.

I really love the 24STM!

Personally I would switch it up between the 85 and the 10-18, and then see which one delivers more images you enjoy by looking through your library over the next several trips.

My guess is you will just use the 24 80% of the time. But the experiment will tell you if you find more interesting wide/ultra wide or more tele photos. I like shooting action and wildlife but that is usually a dedicated situation rather than being unplanned. For more general travel, I think I want tele but end up taking better shots with wide.

It's funny, I just came back from France, where I brought the 6D with the 16-35F4L, the 40mm pancake, and the 24-105 F4. While the pictures from the 16-35 are gorgeous, I found that the 40mm shots were just as nice- and I preferred the quality to those of the 24-105. More and more I'm tempted to travel with the UW zoom, a middle prime, and a tele (in my case the 70-300L, for you, maybe the 55-250?).

Just my take on travel photos. And it sure is nice to leave the heavy lenses in the hotel and bop around with the little lens!

How about the 10-22 + 50/1.8 STM? The 10-22 is quite big but it covers such a useful range and covers pretty close to the 24mm.

If the 24mm is a must and you are looking for another lens for portraits then 40/2.8, 50/1.8 STM, Canon 60/2.8, or Tamron 60/2 seem pretty good.

Probably the 85 1.8, a 55-250 or 70-200 offer a good complementary range, but I'd hate to go without an UWA zoom.

Thanks!

Did a little trip with the 24 and 85.

The 24 was great and the 85 a little long for some shots.  Perfect for others, but I think the 50 STM is the answer for when wanting to travel really light.  Plus, the 50 STM is a lot smaller so the winner is the 24mm pancake and 50mm STM.

For more extended trips I think it'll be the 10-18, 24, maybe my 35, 50 and 85.

When wildlife is at hand then adding either the 70-300 or 100-400; neither of which I've get obtained and still not sure which.
