90/2 compatibility with TC 1.4

Hi,

I am curious if the 90mm prime is compatible with the 1.4x teleconverter.
Officially there is no statment on this - but has anyone tried it?

Cheers!

ANSWER:
XF 90mm

Re: 90/2 compatibility with TC 1.4

As far as I know, the TC 1.4X and the TC 2.0X only work with the 50-140mm and the 100-400mm.

Some have claimed that the 1.4 TC works with lenses like the 55-200; I haven't seen confirmation though.

Simple answer No.  I believe only the 50-140 and 100-400.  As you can see, the front protrudes and would imagine damage any other lens you tried to fit it to.

Awesome, thanks for the insight!

Re: 55-200mm compatibility with TC 1.4 ?

There's a "hole" in the 55-200mm lens in the rear, which gets deeper as you zoom the lens in toward longer focal lengths. As to whether the cavity is large enough to fit the TC, I have no idea. Seems like someone who owns both can try it out carefully and let us know. Maybe the inner cylinder of the TC fits, but you need to make sure to keep the lens above a certain focal length and not zoom out past a certain mark.

That's the reason why I was asking - the rear element is about 1cm inside the barrel...

Re: 55-200mm compatibility with TC 1.4 ?

Correction to my previous post: I looked carefully and found that I had missed a static rear-most element that does not protrude farther in as you zoom the 55-200mm lens. So anyway, if that rear element is not recessed far enough for the TC, it won't work. If it is, it might work.

Yes, as you have seen, the rear most glass does not move in the 55-200 and the length of the TC is too long for a fit, also for the 90mm.

Rear element of 90mm is about 0.9cm inside the lens.

Just wondering, what if we can put a MCEX11 between the teleconverter and the lens? It might lose focus at infinity, but I hope this setup can still be usable in some cases (e.g. macro). I can't afford a 2x converter just for this experiment, so I'll be very happy if someone can give it a try.

The 90, as others have pointed out, is not listed as compatible with two TCs.

However, several posts are listing only the two zooms as compatible. In addition, the 80mm Macro is also listed as working with both TCs.

I just happened to be looking at the 80 before I came to this thread.

Exact. And just to be sure : I just tried my TC 1.4 and my 90 F2. The connection is not possible.

The teleconverters work well with the 80mm. You might consider that as an alternative to the 90mm.

An expensive way of getting 160mm f4.  The 55-200 would be a better buy.
