Panasonic 14-150 ll on the GM-5

Just wonder,...does anybody do this combination, and how does it work. They are relatively similar i  weight, the lens is maybe big compared to the camera. But does anybody use those two in combination?

I assume you mean the Panasonic 14-140 II?

I had this with a Franiec grip on the GM5, but found it a little too small to be honest. It was too small to handle well. Whilst it is indeed a small combo, it won't go in your pocket thus you have to carry it and so you may as well attach it to a G7 body instead. That is ergonomically a superb set up and is no more difficult to carry around than the GM5 with a 14-140 attached.

That's what I use now

By the way, I use the Panny  35-100 (2,8) alot with the GM-5, and I think its' a great combo!

If you're OK with that combo, then the 14-140 II should be fine. The zooming action  isn't as smooth as the 35-100, and the image quality is a notch below, but it's a very good lens. Buy it from a reputable dealer with a return policy and send it back if you don't like it.

35-100 f/2.8 is 100mm long and 360g in weight.

14-140 II is 75mm long and 265g in weight.

If you find shooting 35-100 f/2.8 on GM5 fine, it must be easier to handle 14-140 II (shorter and lighter, theoretically better in balancing).

My wife use it on GF3 (slightly heavier and larger than GM5) for many serious overseas trips, including shooting in -25°C wearing gloves, without problem and had reasonably good result.

I suppose you should have aware the difference in zoom range. On 14-140 II, we have to twist the zoom ring a lot more from 14 to 140 vs a shorter distance for 35-100. As Panny has added reasonable friction to the lens (against gravity automatic falling off), further distance + extra force might add instability during the zoom action. A bit more worse on smaller camera. But it is AF as fast, and as sharp / contrast as the pro lens except for the speed. On versatility, it wins hands down.

I have used my GM5 body with almost all of my lenses.  The longest lens that I have mounted is the 100-300...have not yet tried the 100-400.  The trick is to support the lens from below with the left hand. If you do that, you can balance any lens you wish to use..  A small body like the GM5 will not work well for those who wish to hold the body with two hands while framing with the LCD.  Being an EVF user, I have no such problem.

To me, the biggest single advantage if using that lens on the GM5 is the fact that shutter shock is completely eliminated because of the GM5's first curtain electronic shutter, which sadly, isn't available on any other Panasonic body.

I used it on my GM5 at Goodwood Revival last year. Had both that and my GH3 with 100-300mm round my neck for the airshow bits, the perfect combo!

True. But I wonder if the new shutter mechanism on the GX80 helps? On my GX8 I just use the Auto mode and I have no problems. If I need to freeze action I just use a high shutter speed where shock isn't an issue.

Re: Panasonic 14-150 ll on the GM-5

I have a mk I 14-140 and it's comically large on the GM-5. It's also 200g or so heavier than the mk II.

The biggest issue I have is that I basically have to carry the camera by the lens and I have to hold the lens to balance the camera when I shoot. It's not a big deal, it's just different than using my GH1/G7 with a nice grip.

Oh, and my hand has to be farther out on the barrel of the lens to balance properly. Though that would be less of an issue with the Mk II.

Also, it looks really funny.

I bought a Sony RX100 grip for my GM5 and that made it much better to use with the 14-140.

Yep, I use exactly the same set up and it works fine.
