TechArt Pro tip for setting lens info

Same here - I still have F29 for 90mm and F32 for 135mm. But a) I shoot the initializing lens ID shot in M mode, then switch to S mode and ignore what the f setting in the EVF says, I will try what you suggest ( shoot ID exposure than move to f2.

What mode to you initialize and then shoot in?

Very interesting, thank you for checking. Apparently I have a problem with either my adapter or the camera or perhaps a setting that needs to be changed. I have tried both M and A modes. with ILCE-7RM2 Ver. 3.20, Lens Ver.03 . When I change aperture from F11, I see F11, F13, F16, F19, F22, F27, F32 , F38, F45, F54, F64, F76 and F90 .

F29 and other useful settings such as F40 are not available.

I did try powering off and removing the lens with only the adapter installed and was surprised to see all the F settings available! Unfortunately I have not been able to duplicate since and now only the limited settings shown above are available, with or without the lens installed.

I do not have a problem selecting the full range of aperture with any of my FE lens (limited to F22), therefore it would seem to be a problem with the adapter or perhaps a menu setting causing some of the aperture settings to not display.

I can use my CV 90mm by initializing at F22 in either M or A mode but of course it shows 35mm in the exif.

Not sure if related to the aperture issue, but quite often I receive green light focus confirmation on an object in the foreground with actual focus well behind the focal point. Perhaps this is also a problem with my adapter.

Returning the adapter for repair or exchange will probably take months so I will continue to try different menu settings or perhaps wait for another firmware update. I really want this to work as the CV 15mm, 40mm Heliar and 90mm are great travel lens with the A7RII.

Thanks again for your response.

Finally discovered a way to set the lens info and allow full range of F settings to display. Perhaps it is unique to my adapter but if not this technique will be useful to others:

If you have the same problem as described above, simply move the exposure compensation dial + or - 1/3 ! Cannot explain why but doing so allows the appropriate F setting to display on my system. I need to do further testing but this technique also seems to correct the back focus issue as well...at least on the first few shots.

I am concerned why the EV dial interacts with the adapter in this way and will continue to study. If others have the same issue it should be fixable with the next firmware update.

Make sure as you adjust the aperture wheel you look at more than the top row of biggest F numbers. Some appear ONLY in the lower center black frame that surrounds the image. The image is in focus ONLY if you see at least one phase detection little green square on the image. I bet you're missing some "between F number settings" that appear only in that frame.

The F settings you see with FE lenses cannot be compared to those you see with the TechArt. Those F settings are part of the two-way communication between camera and AF lens.

Yes, I have seen the green ball focus confirmation come on and the image to be out of focus. That appears to be a mis-focus - what focus area have you selected? I am using "center." I had green-ball confirmation of a scene and while the subject (background) was out of focus, someone who stepped into the edge of the frame was sharper. Ignore green balls without small-square confirmation.

check the menus for your exposure compensation adjustments. is it 0.3 stops or 0.5 stops per click? may be something to do with that.

A for initialization.  A and S for taking pictures.

I have now successfully initialized 15mm=F11, 35mm=F22, 50mm=F25, 90mm=F29 and taken correctly exposed images with F=2 showing the correct Exif that I had set.

However, when I choose 135mm=F32 the camera switches from AF to MF and is stuck there until I reset with F11,22,25, or 29.

Thanks for the question.  No.  In A mode I switch to e.g. F22 for a 35mm lens, then take one shot, then switch back to F2, still in A mode.  Then I typically use either A or S mode, no need to use M, for taking pictures.  My preference is for APS-C and Flexible Spot S. M. or L, but centered.  I prefer wide open, but when light and contrast are good manage to get focus up to F/8.  Good luck!

Isn't this a terrific thread? USA, London, Singapore collaboration!

DPR is really great how it enables this kind of information/experience exchange.

I just tried the A mode as khaw described. It works better than any other setting.

Thanks to the TechArt adapter I can now pack a CV15 III, 35mm f1.4 Summilux-M, 50mm f2 Summicron-M, and a 90mm f2.8 Tele-Emarit M - now all AF - in a tiny Domke F-5XB shoulder/belt bag I used to use to carry my NEX-6 and lenses. It also holds a Yeenon helical adapter (in case the TechArt fails), up to 6 batteries, and a Series 7 polarizer (for the 3 Leica lenses) and a 58mm for the CV15.

I carry my spare and shot SD cards and an iPad camera card adapter in a ThinkTank PeeWee PPR case that clips to my PacSafe 200 slash-resistant shoulder strap.

I bought all lenses but the CV 15 III more than 30 years ago when I was shooting a Leica M4P. I bought the Summilux used in Frankfurt for $325 back then, and the Tele-Elmarit for under $400 used in Copenhagen. The Summicron cost me $900 in 1982 with the M4P demonstrator body.

Those lenses were stored for most of the past 20 years as I switched to Canon F1/T90 SLRs, then Nikon DSLRs.

Sony & TechArt justify my having hung onto those lenses all these years.

Maybe those old Leica lenses aren't the equal of the best Sony-Zeiss lenses sold today. But I own them - so the price is right - and boy is this compact for travel!

Nice setup! Something making me lust just like I had a real desire for the CLE kit but never bought it at the time as it was way out of reach for my budget at that time. And yes it's amazing what you can do today with a little help from Sony and TechArt. Fully agree that this is a terrific thread.

Re: TechArt Pro auto focus for manual lens, version 3 firmware released

Hi

I'm new to posting, although a DPR reader for years.

I bought the Techart LM-EA7 a while back and have not been able to get it to work with my A7RII.

I follow the instructions, but get "Adapter LM-EA7 not found, try again" on my iPhone APP each time.  Also I only get "FF--" when I switch on the camera with adapter attached, and none of the controls seem to change it to F90.  What am I missing?  I use Manual mode on the camera, and have tried with and w/o Leica M lens attached.  Are there other settings that I should be trying on the camera?

Any help appreciated.

thanks

ColinBoulder

Re: TechArt Pro auto focus for manual lens, version 3 firmware released

Only way I would come back is if they made a FW update that

- allowed you to pick FL through the IBIS FL selector on the body

- made the adapter work with the Smart Remote app

- made it more accurate in AF-S mode

I was amazed that it worked at all but not enough to keep it.
