TechArt Pro auto focus for manual lens, version 3 firmware released
2

Version 3 of the firmware just posted... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.techart.updateall or https://www.facebook.com/techartadapter/posts/585073628327770:0

I installed the update without issue using the android app and tested version 3 with about 50 shots this afternoon on my A7RII. The camera did freeze one time out of 50 however I only needed to switch power off and on again to restore the camera functions, as opposed to removing the battery frequently with version 2.

Version 3 of the firmware seems to have a more stable camera interface during initial test.

Still waiting for the app that allows the user to set more complete lens data in exif info.

Thanks for the notice! Well, it now really works with ALL my M-mounts - from CV15mm III through my Canon 135 f3.5 LTM with an M adapter.

For anyone who owns a 50mm f2 Summicron-M, this update just rocks. You're now talking less than a half second from closest focus to infinity. I was getting a bit frustrated with my TechArt adapter this weekend when shooting scenery with my partner waiting - and removed it and replaced it with my Yeenon helical because MF was quicker and surer.

I just did a series of tests with the 3.0 software and it looks very promising. I gambled that TechArt would continue with the firmware upgrades and so far, so good.

BTW - the name of the company making these seems to be "Nitian Corp."according to the plate on the back of my TechArt adapter..

Re: TechArt Pro auto focus for manual lens, version 3 firmware released

I tried the iOS app to update the LA-EA7 adapter. No success and am getting this message:

"Adapter LA-EA7 not found, please try again"

Has anybody successfully used the iOS app to up date to Ver3.0.0? TIA.

I followed these instructions:

Firmware Upgrade Instructions
1) Make sure the battery level of your camera and phone is >50%
2) Make sure the Auto-Lock of your phone is OFF
3) Plug in the adapter to your camera body
4) Turn ON the camera, change the aperture value to F/90 (not F/9 !), release the shutter
5) Turn OFF the camera (IMPORTANT!)
6) Run the app in the smartphone and select the firmware 3.0 under LM-EA7
7) Click ‘Update’
8) Wait around 10 mins for the update to complete
9) SUCCESS

Question:  Do I have to enable wi-fi on the A7r2 camera?

How does the iPhone communicate with the adapter when the camera is switched off?

K-H.

You did everything right. What mode was the camera in when you chose F90 and clicked the shutter? I found that M mode works best for setting the F number for both firmware updates and installing lenses.

F90 turns on the bluetooth receiver in the TechArt adapter. You must have an internet connection with your iPhone to download the firmware. i believe there is a small battery in the adapter that is charged by the camera power when the camera is powered on.

I actually had to do the upgrade twice. The first time, it hung at about 12000 bytes. If that happens, you have to swipe off the app and restart the F90/powerdown/click on the 3.0 firmware.

Is there a manual for the adapter F stop to focal lengths any where? I haven't but just incase I lose the paper manual that came with the adapter. Also anyone with a 500mm lens what are you setting the camera to before shooting?

the firmware v3 seems to have disappeared from the website.

all i see on the Facebook link is the 20th April version 2 update.

did they pull the update after discovering some bugs?

EDIT - found the firmware on the android app itself instead of the techart facebook page or home page.

I checked the lens, it's now at Ver.03!

Hi, sorry to be away from the forum - usually have it open but this @#$%^& Brexit is distracting business-wise.

Yep, you have it! Any impressions yet? I think it's snappier. I shoot in S mode since aperture is on the lens. I use M solely when I switch lenses and take one shot before using it.

Here's how I log my lens setup on each M mount cap.

I am still struggling to remember to manually enter the lens focal length into SteadyShot - this past weekend I was shooting with a 300mm lens (not on the TechArt) and switched to my 35mm f1.4 Summilux-M on the TechArt - and forgot to change the Steadyshot to 35mm. Even when holding the camera pretty stable, the IBIS compensation error really messes the image!

PS: Anyone else have the Sony software identifying lenses attached to the TechArt as some "Sony 28-75mm f2.8 DT"?

Re: TechArt Pro auto focus for manual lens, version 3 firmware released

Version 3 is definitely an improvement, however, after further testing with the A7RII I noticed that some of the lens F settings are not compatible or not working. For example, when I install the CV 90MM lens, I am unable to select F29 as an option on the camera. If I select anything above F22 the adapter does not auto focus. If I select F22 or lower number the adapter works fine, however it records a different focal length in the exif.

Has anyone else noticed the F setting for the lens disables auto focus above F22 with version 3?

F45 still works for parking the adapter in last position in order to use manual focus but F40 (maximum extension) and F36 (infinity) are not shown as options on the camera.

I think you are supposed to select F29, take a shot manually to the camera to register it as a 90mm lens, and switch back to F2.0 for normal shooting.

the exif will remain at 90mm. Always shoot at F2.0. I find that shooting at any other aperture setting (electronically in the camera) will result in weird over exposures/under exposures.

nice idea to stick that on the lens cap.

you could leave the IBIS focal length settings at Auto, since you always change the lens settings at every lens swap.

The techart seems to always show as the 28-75 lens, even if u change the lens settings using the F11/22/35/29/32 settings.

You are correct, F29 sets the adapter to register 90mm. With version 2 of the firmware I was able to select F29. After installing version 3, F29 is not displayed as an option, F22 is an option, F27 and F32, but nothing in between. Does anyone else have the same problem with version 3?

the exif will remain at 90mm. Always shoot at F2.0. I find that shooting at any other aperture setting (electronically in the camera) will result in weird over exposures/under exposures.

You are correct, F29 sets the adapter to register 90mm. With version 2 of the firmware I was able to select F29. After installing version 3, F29 is not displayed as an option, F22 is an option, F27 and F32, but nothing in between. Does anyone else have the same problem with version 3?

Ah thats bad. I use my 90mm cron quite often. A7r2 is currently off for servicing so i have  yet to update to v 3

Thanks Mordi. That was it. It found the adapter.

Next question, how do you tell when the update process is finished?

Mordi

nice idea to stick that on the lens cap.

you could leave the IBIS focal length settings at Auto, since you always change the lens settings at every lens swap.

The techart seems to always show as the 28-75 lens, even if u change the lens settings using the F11/22/35/29/32 settings.

How reliable is the auto IBIS setting when reading the lens focal length from the TechArt? I worried that it would be wrong and screw up shots. I sure love IBIS. It makes MF with a 300mm almost as easy as with a 35mm.

if you have set the focal length with the F11/22/35/29/32 settings, you will see that even the exif reflects F35/50/90/etc.

From my experience, the auto focal length provided good IBIS to the respective focal lengths.

the other way is to use set IBIS focal length to manual, use one of the custom function buttons to activate change in focal length. I do that sometimes when lazy to use the F11/22/35/29/32 settings

Very interesting, thank you for checking. Apparently I have a problem with either my adapter or the camera or perhaps a setting that needs to be changed. I have tried both M and A modes. with ILCE-7RM2 Ver. 3.20, Lens Ver.03 . When I change aperture from F11, I see F11, F13, F16, F19, F22, F27, F32 , F38, F45, F54, F64, F76 and F90 .

F29 and other useful settings such as F40 are not available.

I did try powering off and removing the lens with only the adapter installed and was surprised to see all the F settings available! Unfortunately I have not been able to duplicate since and now only the limited settings shown above are available, with or without the lens installed.

I do not have a problem selecting the full range of aperture with any of my FE lens (limited to F22), therefore it would seem to be a problem with the adapter or perhaps a menu setting causing some of the aperture settings to not display.

I can use my CV 90mm by initializing at F22 in either M or A mode but of course it shows 35mm in the exif.

Not sure if related to the aperture issue, but quite often I receive green light focus confirmation on an object in the foreground with actual focus well behind the focal point. Perhaps this is also a problem with my adapter.

Returning the adapter for repair or exchange will probably take months so I will continue to try different menu settings or perhaps wait for another firmware update. I really want this to work as the CV 15mm, 40mm Heliar and 90mm are great travel lens with the A7RII.

Thanks again for your response.
