Those Who Use the 24mm STM?
1

If you use the 24mm pancake lens (for street, travel, etc.) do you pretty much reserve that for use alone with no accessories (filters, etc.) at all and the associated limitations and then use your other lenses when you need polarizing and/or ND filters, etc.?

Thanks.  Just weighing whether to bother with a few step-up rings and complementing it with a 50mm 1.8 STM lens or just leaving it alone.

Tomorrow's the big NYC trip so I'll see how it goes with just the 24mm lens and nothing else.

Just returned and it was sort of bright and sunny so didn't get many good ones - one or two of the family on our way to a show and then back.

Learned two things:

- I think I do need to complement the 24mm lens with a 50mm STM (just when traveling light and I have my whole other thing when not)

and

- I really don't like NYC at all.  It's actually somewhat terrible.  Gonna try to avoid it like the plague in the future.

Yeah, thats pretty much what I said

Nice place to visit (once in a long while), but living there isn't to nice. I was in Staten Island so it was better, but it was still that cutthroat NYC mentality.

That's pretty much my story from last weekend (two shows in one day was a bit tiring).  I left camera at home and took a few cellphone photos.  NYC is OK.  I lived and worked there years ago and enjoy visiting.

Yeah. Nice to visit.

I just don't like the atmosphere at all. And everything is SO expensive (at least compared to where I am now).

New York has more than one atmosphere. I feel it when moving around the city's neighborhoods. It's one of the things I like about the place.

I understand Hamilton tickets are selling for more in Chicago than they did in New York. And that's without the heralded original cast. Maybe Chicago is trying to shake that "second city" label.

Broadway's great, but you really have to splurge on the expensive seats or you risk sitting right in front of someone chewing gum like a horse the entire time.  Happened the past two times including yesterday.  Don't think I can risk this happening again.

Re: Those Who Use the 24mm STM?

Well I probably won't be going there for quite a long time, I just moved out to Northern Michigan...

Maybe someday if there is something that catches my eye.

That's something the ushers should address.

We were near the front of the balcony for the afternoon show and in the orchestra for the evening.  No cud-chewing, fortunately.

Mezzanine for us at home, at Detroit's Fisher Theater, where the ushers pack heat (just kidding).

Re: Those Who Use the 24mm STM?

I use mine with a yellow filter and a polarizer, with a step up ring. The weight does seem to be a struggle for the AF, but it manages.

Filter size is 52mm...

It only has a 52mm filter size... So filters for it will not be expensive. I'd use my old film era 52mm Toshiba linear pol. filter on it without hesitation.

Thanks. Just weighing whether to bother with a few step-up rings and complementing it with a 50mm 1.8 STM lens or just leaving it alone.

Why step up rings? That adds weight. 52mm filters are many and cheap. I bought a 43mm size circular pol. filter especially for my EF-M 22mm f2 (brand: Marumi) for I think around 25 dollars and did not consider step up rings.

Tomorrow's the big NYC trip so I'll see how it goes with just the 24mm lens and nothing else.

As a visitor it is hard to see what NYC is really like.

I lived there for 8 years and frequently visit.

It is one of the most diverse, high-energy, and creative places in the world. Only Paris and Rome in my experience give it a run for it's money.

If you know the town, there are some awesome photo opportunities of all kinds (yes, even wildlife). But you have to get off the tourist track to see them. Also, some of the finest photographers in the world live there.

But it's not for everybody, I finally had enough and had to move away! Now I love returning to visit, and take pictures!

Re: Those Who Use the 24mm STM?

I just stick that lens as it is on a lightweight body when I'm travelling - a 100D (SL1) in the past (before my wife took it over...), and most recently an old 500D. I did a walk through the Samaria Gorge in Crete a couple of weeks ago - long (17kms), steep (4,000ft drop in height), hot (35º+) and I was glad I had just the 500D + 24mm. I've never bothered putting filters, etc, on the lens. Not even a UV filter.
