Which lens for video shooting on Panasonic GX85?
1

I've got a Panasonic GX85 and liking it a lot. I also have 3 lenses - Panasonic 12-32mm 3.5-5.6, the Olympus 45mm 1.8 and the Sigma 30mm 2.8 (Mark I).

As the GX85 has got 4k with stabilisation, I've been using it more to take video of my 3 young kids. If I was to get another lens for video shooting plus fast autofocus (DFD) stills, which one would be advisable?

I've been looking at the Panny 25mm 1.7 as it's cheap $A249, but is it wide enough for video? Also, the Panny 20mm f1.7 MkII is only $A199 after a $100 cashback. I had the MkI 20mm, is the 2nd version still slow to autofocus and noisy?

Looking forward to your thoughts.

Panny 15 1.7.  Not cheap though.

Your 12-32mm has focal length markings on the lens barrel, so by zooming it out to 25mm it will give an accurate representation of the field of view the prime will give you.

I don't have the 20mm II but from all reports the autofocus performance is very similar to the first version.  Not sure about the AF noise.

PL15, it's a great lens.  I use it for video on my GM5, but I don't get IS on that body.  It would be a great match up with the GX85

No way would the 20mm work for video. Forget it.

No way would the 20mm work for video. Forget it. Only consider modern, video optimized lenses, such as the two Pany 2.8 zooms, or at least the 12-35.

Personally, I like the Panasonic 7-14mm f4.

Another option might be the new Panasonic 12-60mm.

Mmmmm, thought as much with the 20. What about the 25 1.7?

Re: Which lens for video shooting on Panasonic GX85?

I was just testing the 20mm, 12-32 kit and a 25mm 1.8 OLY that I have with video on the gx85, and it's obvious the 20mm is slow, hunts a bit and noisy compared to the 12-32.  The 12-32 does pretty good as far as speed and seems to hit the focus and is quiet  (this is just playing around at my desk in mixed morning sunlight and lamps).  The 25mm OLY is slow to focus with video.

Thanks for that MrClam. I wonder how the panny 25mm 1.7 goes.

you have a 12-32 lens so test it out on what zoom level does not work.  so you know what you should not get.

Another vote for the 15mm  f/1.7. Get in close to the kids it will be perfect. Skip the 20 for video. It does print great images, but the AF is a grind. The 25mm 1.7 is no slouch either but as you thought it may not be wide enough. Another great lens is the 12-35 f/2.8 zoom. On the GX85 you get the dual stabilization with it.

Have fun!

Get the 14-140mm mark ii

Get the 14-140mm mark ii. Its very sharp and flexible.

I use it with my GX7 and it's very fun to use because you got a whole range of focal lengthes for lots of occasions.

Re: Which lens for video shooting on Panasonic GX85?

There are two lenses which are maximized for video zoom...the 14-42 PZ and 45-175 PZ.  I use the latter for still shots.  As suggested earlier, you might like to look at the Pana 15 1,7.
