Canon 760D Shutter Delay

I just bought a Canon 760D with an EFS 18-135 mm lens with Auto Focus and Stabilizer. My last camera was a Konica T3 ! :))  I have noticed a significant shutter delay in the 760D. Can you explain the best way to set the camera for best daylight action shots and for instant shutter response? I don't need a lot of detail, just a few points to give me a clue. I will figure it out from that. Thank you.

Hi,

In 'one shot' mode it uses 'focus priority', when this is active the camera will not take a photo till focus has been achieved. Hence at times there can be a delay.

There is also a 2 second timer delay, check in the menu's you havn't set that, you would know if this was the case because it would be a constant 2 sec. delay.

'best way to set the camera for best daylight action shots.'

I would use 'shutter priority' and set the shutter speed to freeze the action, depends on what your shooting as to shutter speed, trial and error here I'm afraid.

Use 'Aperture priority' for general photography as you can adjust your F stop to give you a large or small depth of field depending on what you are trying to achieve.

There's lots of info for free if you Google it, and there are many good books to give you an insight into DSLR photography.

Good Luck.

Hi,

Here's an article on this website 'Rebel Forum FAQ' that should give you some useful information to get you started.

What settings are you currently using?  Incl your autofocus settings/technique.

Thanks,

Just how are you using the camera? I'm guessing in live view.

assuming that you use your camera in viewfinder mode (not live view) and in aperture, shutter, or program (P, i.e. variable aperture and shutter mode):

Set your lens to manual focus, turn of IS on the lens. Now it's like a Konica T3, there should be little delay.  If the picture is out of focus, though, it's like the Konica, you messed up

Seriously. AF may need a little time, depending on light, distance, focal length, subject, focus points etc.   IS may also take a bit to stabilize.  As mentioned, one important point is that with single shot mode, the camera will only trigger when it thinks it has a sharp image. In Servo mode, it just keeps shooting, where sharp or not, it doesn't care, it just tries to follow the action.   Choice of focus points has an impact as well.

Maybe you want to start of with single center point and single shot AF - it's perhaps to most similar to the old Konica, with a single central focusing aid, and see how the AF does in comparison to your manual action (which also must have taken it's time)

Use the Sports scene mode and shoot through the viewfinder - if you still get a shutter delay in good light then something is wrong and I'd suggest you post a jpeg on here (straight out of the camera with all the metadata attached) to get better advice.

To absolutely minimize shutter delay you might half press on the shutter button while setting up your shot so that the focus is already close to being correct.

As you get more familiar with the camera you can start to make your own decisions on shutter speed, aperture and ISO (and all the other settings) but at least you've got a starting point (and no shutter delay).
