Double image -- Focus Magic fixes it
3

Photographing the Queen's Birthday Kokopo > Rabaul 30+km bike race today, I nearly missed a pic of the winner of the women's open section. She was picked up by a police Toyota about 1km from the finish and it then proceeded to lead her in.

But it was actually going to slowly for her so as she came to my photo point near the finish, she was right up behind it, within a meter or two -- and out of sight!

I just had time to grab a shot woth the GX7+12-35 as she went past next to me -- and to my surprise, when I looked at the pic, it was a double or spread image of her. I had feared a focusing error so had given it a bit of aperture.

I applied Focus Magic Motion Blur filter, was able to ascertain that the extent of the spread -- 7 pixels horizontally -- and it fixed her up nicely.

But check out the figures in the background of the corrected image! LOL!

Corrected image.

Original image.

Fortunately she had a big lead so the slowness of the police car was not a threat to her position.

A fun day, even if tropical rain did drip down a bit most of the time; not real rain (that was overnight) bnut drip, drip, drip out of gray skies. Didn't worry anyone, of course; some had umbrellas but most didn't bother to open them -- after all, the drip, drip, drip and the air are both warm.

Fixed the background, softened the subject

The double image in the background is nicely fixed, but the subject is visibly softened even at this resolution. I'd say the original image is better. Look at the bill of her hat. Your fix actually added a double image to the subject.

I see a change

Writing on her hat is clearly improved.

My question: why is she only wearing a hat in a bicycle race?

Looks like you didn't read the captions, BJ

The first pic is the corrected one. That's how they came out of the gallery and I was too tired to fix it. heavy day.

Look at the outline of her nose and upper lip (particularly because of the light). marked improvement, I think.

My question: why is she only wearing a hat in a bicycle race?

Poor country, Barry. Lots of the riders were bare foot, many pedaling on the pedal pegs, the pedals long gone. Part of the route was corrugated, pot holed dirt, part of it pot holed bitumen.

The bike race is mad but everyone loves it.

I'll post a few more pix later.

Re: I see a change

Well done - does look better - though if you want to keep the pic you might want to crop out further/ mask and selectively blur the background with the guys in it.

It does seem to be a good prog - but do you have creative cloud?  It would be interesting to see how well the PS reduce camera shake filter works on this pic... similar improvement or left behind?

No cloud doccy. What you are seeing is a 100% crop. The full pic looks fine now for what I want.

I work in Photoline for PP. Focus Magic has been around since practically the beginning of time, by the way providing, providing this kind of correction long before Adobe thought of it (or could do it).

I could be a salesman for Focus Magic. :-)

Henry,

Nice save using FM. I have been using it for years, and it has saved and improved many, many images. I have been able to turn unsellable prints into sellable print many times, so it has paid for itself over and over again.

Motion blur correction work very well if motion is all in the same direction and you can accurately determine the direction.

Interestingly, I like the way it sharpens so much that I actually use it as my primary sharpening software. I does not create near the halos and artifacts that most other sharpening tools do. What I will generally do is select only the areas I want sharpened, such as faces, etc. and then apply FM to those.

It's just a great program.

Excellent! I rendered it down with bleach and multiple stone washing after optimized hippo munching and rhino stamping to ensure it would meet your need to make a useless comment.

And you picked it immedaitley and responded as planned.

Have a good day.

Saved me many a time even with multiple direction motion blur. And, of course, I use its general out of focus sharpening daily even though the PP app I use, PhotoLine, has some excellent sharpening tools.

in this case, I will do a little general sharping of the pic later.

As a long time user of FM (and recommended it here many times) I'd point out that, when used in 'plug-in' mode - to, for instance, Photoshop - the corrections can be applied to a selected area - or a selection can be made as a separate layer and the corrections applied to that only. That gets rid of the 'background effect'  that you mention above.

I often use it in group photos where one member of the group decided to move at the press of a shutter!

Thanks for sharing!

I had never thought of that! And PhotoLine, which I have FM plugged into, is layers to the nth degree. Good grief.

Thanks to you both! I'm really glad I posted! This forum is a mine of information.
