Does the GX8 latest firmware solve shutter shock with the 14-140mm lens?

Does the GX8 latest firmware solve shutter shock with the 14-140mm lens?

I believe the firmware update tells the camera to always use electronic shutter in the problematic focal length range. Has anyone confirmed that this fixes the known shutter shock problem with the new Panasonic 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 lens when using it with the GX8, so this lens is now sharp at all shutter speeds?

Secondly, does it fix the micro-jitter that is supposed to occur with this lens when using it for video?

Thanks.

Re: Does the GX8 latest firmware solve shutter shock with the 14-140mm lens?

Not quite right. On page 5 of the shooting menu you have the option to set the electronic shutter to Auto, on, or off. You have to be aware of your silent setting as well as the two interact.

If the menu item is set to auto, electronic shutter is automatically used for shutter speeds from 1/60 to 1/320, and mechanical shutter outside those speeds (assuming silent is set to off, silent on forces electronic shutter all the time)

If electronic is off you get the mechanical shutter all the time unless you turn silent on, which overrides the menu setting and forces electronic with no sounds

If electronic is on, you get electronic with sounds (focus confirm and selectable shutter sound) if silent is off, and no sound if silent is on.

Frankly I find the whole shutter shock thing is vastly overblown, and used as an excuse for every blurry photo! If you are looking for the last pixel detail and might use shutter speeds between 1/60 and 1/320 it might be worthwhile using the automatic feature (you might then get rolling shutter effects, I know. You might also get struck by lightning while taking the photo ;- )

If you print 9x12 inch you won't notice the difference.

However the issue has gained a cult following on here, mostly from people who don't even use either a 14-140 or GX8, and credit to Panasonic for responding with this software work around.

I don't think that in normal use, without using the auto feature you will see a shutter shock problem, anyway. However if you did, the software update would fix it.

Sorry, I can't help with the video question

Re: Does the GX8 latest firmware solve shutter shock with the 14-140mm lens?

I never had shutter shock with the E-P5, although it was reported by some, even before I used their new EFCS solution, which I think is a better solution than Panasonic's.

I think it may be over-reported to a degree, but it seems to be a real issue with the combo I mentioned. Check out slrgear's report of it and photos half way down the page, it's terrible. And slrgear is a site I like and trust with lens reviews. They were getting blurred photos even using a tripod.

I expect Pany will introduce the EFCS solution to their cameras as soon as they can. It's quite surprising that they have not already done so.

The GX7 and GX8 both have very good electronic shutter options (12 bit read-out), so image quality with eshutter can be quite good. Only issues are lights that turn on and off rapidly (many cheap LED lights do this, and florescent lights do this at 60hz) -- and helicopter blades

The GX85 shutter seems like a great solution as well, but I hope that doesn't derail Pany from adding EFCS.

I don't use the GX8 "auto" mode for shutter shock, but that's because I never have had issues with the GX8 and shutter shock (and I've tested for it, and can even find ways to reproduce it if I want to.) Knowing how it occurs allows you to relatively easily avoid it. If you can't avoid it, shoot in the low speed burst mode (to minimize blackout), and only some portion will show SS, even with the worst lenses in the worst shutter speed ranges.

Yes, they're fairly trustworthy. No doubt it is a real issue at times and with certain lenses. Like I said, I can't believe that Pany hasn't already included EFCS.
