Which Canon Rebel model is the sucessor to which model

There are the T6, T6i and T6s and the T5 and the T5i.  Is the T6i the successor to T5i or is the T6s the successor?  Which model of T6 cameras are the successor to which model of T5?

T6 suceeded the T5 ... .

T6i suceeded the T5i ... .  The T_i line is separate from the T_ line, with different features and price points.

The T6s is the first model of a new T_s line.

The T6/ 1300D is the successer the the T5/ 1200D.... the successor to the T5i/700D is both the T6i/750D and the T6s/760D  ..canon has split the line the T6s/760D is higher speck than the T6i/750D

The T_i series is refreshed about once a year. The T_s is not officially a new series yet.

See here.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Canon_EOS_digital_cameras

The chart is ordered from high end at top to low end at the bottom.

  • The T_i series is in the row that starts with 300D, but the T1i model is the 500D
  • The T_ series is the row that starts with the 1000D

To resolve the xxxD and xxxxD model numbers to T_i and T_ see here:

I see another poster has posted a time line chart ... the T6/1300D is at the bottom...but i wouldn't advice getting one as thay are  old recycled tech when new and a better option is available for the same or less cash new ..the SL1 or 100D in the UK.. is based on the T5i /700D but in a smaller body ..has no flappy LCD ..it out specks the T6 /1300D in every way and is the same price or cheaper as its an older model now ..main advantage of the SL1 over the T6 is a touch screen ,auto sensor clean, bundled with the better STM lens ,way better live view/video auto focus..spot metering. mic jack ,faster camera..  and most other specks are better ..the T6 has wifi

upgrade strategy

Excellent info.  Now that I have just about all of my gear together I can think about my upgrade strategy.

I come to digital photography from the world of network administration where one of the concepts we talk about is the formulation of an upgrade strategy.  The worst thing in the world to have happen is to have a router or a server go down right in the middle of a mission critical process or in the middle of a work day.  Thus we plan to replace hardware and software to ensure that failures do not happen.  When was the last time that you went out on a picture taking trip and you are all ready to take that Pulitzer prize winning photo and your camera says "I have had it."  Need to balance that with the addition of new capabilities.

I don't like that upgrade cycle at all I think that Canon needs to work harder than that to earn the dollars.  I have had my current model going on two years and I am not ready to upgrade yet.  I am in training at the moment so I can't consider any upgrades while I am in training.  Might move to the middle level models when I do, the 80d, I like that model but do not feel like paying that price for it so I will wait and the 70d does not offer enough to get me to upgrade.  I will wait to see what the 90d looks like in a few years.

What's your upgrade strategy.

I don't really have a strategy.

I'm still happily using the 450D (XSi), which is now an 8 year old model or 6 generations. If I was a heavy user and had money to burn I would have upgraded long ago.

At the moment, I'm not sure when I will upgrade and to what.

You only really have to decide if you want APS-C or full frame as it affects which lenses you buy.  Once you decide this you can jump between the series in these two groups and still re-use all your lenses.

Hi JB'

IMHO the best upgrade strategy (at least in the world of photography) is to let your needs dictate what piece of equipment you purchase next. Upgrading "just to keep current" may end up costing you a whole lot of money over time, and may not really provide anything that benefits you directly.

OTOH whenever I've upgraded my own camera, I've always (without exception) asked myself why I didn't do so sooner! Go figure.

This last time, I upgraded from the T4i (twin to your T5i) to the 70D. And loved it.

I shoot a lot of action and the faster frame rate and much deeper RAW buffer helped to virtually double my keeper rate, plus the AF was an improvement overall. And for videos I went from needing to focus manually, to the best video AF in the business bar none. I also gained about a "stop in IQ," which meant I could either crop in further, print larger, or use a full stop higher ISO (as my "max usable" ISO), than previously. There are also a lot of creature comforts the xxD line provides that I missed after I gave up my 50D.  Those definitely improved the shooting experience.

But my example only applies to my own particular case of course. It's possible none of these improvements or features may enhance your photography at all. You'll have to do your own careful cost/benefit analysis. Maybe get involved in a photo club where you can try out other members' cameras before committing. That's been extremely helpful in my own case, as have been the other members' impressions and recommendations.

At this point, I'll likely skip the 80D (and 7DII for that matter), and may pick up a lens or two instead.

But I know sure as h#ll once I get the 90D in my hands, I'll wonder why I didn't upgrade sooner!!!

Well good luck in your quest! And happy shooting!

R2

For upgrades of camera bodies, the closer to each other in the hierarchy line the incremental the updates will feel. The greater the difference in bodies the greater the improvement.  the higher in the hierarchy, the more professional and robust, but more costly (system wise) and gain in weight.

My strategy is as follows:

1st: Try to resist Gear Acquisition Syndrome (GAS).  It is always tempting to upgrade to the newest and best.  In your case, You may want to wait for a T7i (800D) or T8i (850D).  I stick to cop sensors since I do not find the need to go to full frame.  I am willing to get refurbished and used gear.

2nd: have a set of lenses you like to use that do the things you want to do. Replace (resell) lenses as needed. Good quality lenses can last years and hold their value well. Canon does not replace most lenses for a decade or two (mid to upper level L lenses). The consumer (entry level) lenses get replaced more often and do not retain their value as much.

3rd: Upgrade camera bodies as needed. If there are features that are desired sooner then later; upgrade. I am patient an am willing to wait for a "SlickDeal".  Sell or gift older camera bodies.  Consider keeping a spare camera if you find it useful.
