What is the best non-zipper case for the G7X mark II?
1

For many years I have used a Canon S90 with the M-Rock Yosemite case that features a flip top secured by a little velcro and a plastic clip rather than zippers (I would always worry about scraping the camera on the exposed zipper track when removing it or putting it back; and the clip can be opened and closed very quietly vs. a zipper). There is a front pocket where I keep extra batteries and a little zipped up mesh section built into the flip top for SD cards.

When I bought my Canon G7X mark II (at Henry's--thanks to a post I saw in this forum for that money-saving tip!), I had a thought to see if maybe the M-Rock might be big enough for the G7x; alas, it is not deep enough for the front lens to fit in.

I see this July 2015 review from TS2 on Amazon saying that the G7X fits snugly into the Tamrac 5692 Digital 2 Camera Bag (~ $15), which says it has 3 by 1.5 by 5.25 inches internal dimensions (vs. the 4.2 x 2.4 x 1.7 in. G7XmII dimensions). The Tamrac 5692 Digital 2 bag has the flip top lid and a plastic clip to secure it. The 1.5 depth internal dimension for the 5692 doesn't seem to match the 1.7 inch G7XmII stated depth.

Earlier, I had found the Tamrac Tek on Amazon that says it fits the G7X; however, one of the answered questions disputes this and another answer confirms that the G7XmII does not fit. External Tek dimensions are: 5.6 x 3.3 x 2.5 inches. The Tek certainly looks rather slim vs. my M-Rock Yosemite case.

There is also a Tamrac 5690 case with dimensions 3.2 x 4.5 x 4.8 inches. (maybe would be too big? 4.2 vs. 4.8 length; 2.4 vs. 4.5 width; 1.7 vs. 3.2 depth).

Are there flip-top/plastic clip style camera bags (I wear my M-rock at my waist by using the strap attachment) that are better for the G7XmII? Ones that accommodate a spare battery and SD cards?

It seems like most of the G7X and G7XmII threads about cases talk about Case Logic or Lowepro zip-up cases.

Thanks for any tips,

P.S. Is there a reason that the G7XmII battery compartment door doesn't auto-latch when you close it? At least mine requires a manual locking of the door lock mechanism.

Thus far I find the G7XmII feels bigger and heavier than the S90; it feels much faster and appears to take sharper pictures at lower light levels.

Re: What is the best non-zipper case for the G7X mark II?

Just an update:

I asked a question on Amazon about the 5692 and the G7XmII; the shop owner replied that it would not fit. One of the G7X owners said that it might.

Then I did some more searching online (looking through google images on compact camera cases to try to find another flip-and-clip type of case) and found this 2008 dpreview forum post that mentions the Tamrac 5292 T2 case and shows pictures of that case with the Canon G10.

Image from Al Ruscelli's post showing the G10 with the Tamrac 5292 T2

The G10 (4.3 x 3.1 x 1.8 in) is really not too much bigger than the G7X mark II (4.2 x 2.4 x 1.7 in.). It might slosh around a little on the sides (maybe a bit more than 1/4" on either side (2.4" G7X vs. 2.75" Tamrac 5292 T2 width)), but that seems livable. The 3.5" depth of the case is a bit much (1.5" extra depth over the almost 2" of the camera itself), but maybe it is a reasonable trade off for having a workable case with this form factor (flip-and-clip lid and no zipper on the camera part of the case).

Tamrac 5292 T2

  • Internal dimension: 2 3/4" W x 4 3/4" H x 2" D,
  • External dimensions: 4 1/2" W x 5 3/4" H x 3 1/2" D

I have a flip top from Amazon Basics but it's been discontinued. The closest thing I can find to it is from Zeikos

Hello NMK2

I use the soft case from Canon, dedicated for the model Sx170is and it is awesome!

It has a zipper but it is very well constructed and the zipper does not touch the camera at all!

It fits perfectly together with an spare battery and SD card.

Best regards

Luís

Re: What is the best non-zipper case for the G7X mark II?

Thanks, yoshi. The Zeikos doesn't have a spare compartment for battery and cards, so I think I will stick with the fatter Tamrac 5292 T2.

Luis, your suggestion of the Canon case looks interesting (though I still want a case with a plastic clip (and I have ordered the 5292--and I'll post pictures once it arrives); is there a pocket inside for the battery and card? Or do you end up putting those at the bottom of the case with a cloth on top?

Thanks,

Re: What is the best non-zipper case for the G7X mark II?

Hello Tim

It has two different compartments inside, on the back I place the battery and on top I place the SD card, so, no scratches from these two adds.

I bought it on an FNAC store.

From the pictures, it looks a bit big.

Re: What is the best non-zipper case for the G7X mark II?

I ordered the Tamrac 5689 and 5690 from Amazon. The 5690 was an add on for $4.49. I'll report back. I don't need much storage because I can use my Olympus bag to carry extra stuff.

I got this small Lowepro when I bought the camera and did not like it at all. It has a zipper and it does not open completely. Tough getting the camera out when the case is attached to your belt.

Re: What is the best non-zipper case for the G7X mark II?

The Tamrac 5292 T92 arrived. It surprised me by how bulky it was, even though I had known the dimensions.

G7X mark II inside the Tamrac 5292 T92

top down view

This is the killer--the external depth of the 5292 compared with the G7X mark II

The front view.

So while I was prepared to have something that was a bit bulkier, this just seemed a bit too much so. Build quality is excellent as always with Tamrac bags. The G7XmII fits loosely inside--indeed, it slides in very easily (maybe a bit too easily). I have to consider whether to return it (currently leaning that way).

I see that the Tamrac 5290 has some interesting dimensions:

Tamrac 5290

  • 3 x 4.75 x 4 inches (half an inch narrower, half an inch shallower, 1 inch shorter)
  • Exterior Dimensions 4.0 x 3.0 x 4 3/4" (10 x 8.0 x 12cm) (WxDxH)
  • Interior Dimensions 2 1/2 x 1 3/4 x 3 3/4" (6.0 x 4.0 x 10cm) (WxDxH)

The G7X mark II is smaller than the interior dimensions (just slightly) in every dimension except for height; but the overall G7X height is lower than the 4 3/4" height; so perhaps it would still be sufficiently tall to be protective?

Edit: By the way, I found this ebay post for the 5290, showing it with the G7X . It's not clear just how snug it is in the bag (which is a worry with the G7XmII being slightly thicker). I certainly wouldn't want a bag that required me to fiddle with the camera to get it to slide in :-/.   But what if it turns out to be perfect?

Re: What is the best non-zipper case for the G7X mark II?

Got the Tamrac 5689 and 5690 today. In short, both will work. It is a snug fit in the 5690, which has a snap/velcro belt loop that may be a little iffy.  The 5689 is definitely larger but that makes the camera very easy to get in and out.  The 5689 also has a proper sewn belt loop.

Does an extra battery & memory card fit in the 5690 with the camera easily?
Also, isn't the only velcro in 5689 more iffy than the added snap of 5690 ?

Yes, there is a small front pouch designed specifically for an extra battery and memory card. I also added a picture of the 5690 belt loop snap/velcro system.  The 5690 is only $4.50 on Amazon as an add on item.

Ahha, now if see that the 5690 is definitely a risky option - a small bump or an impulse force may make your case go on the ground!

Thanks for the pictures. I'll mostly go with the 5689.
Did anyone get a screen-protector ?

I suspect that I won't convince any non-believers, but the last few posts have convinced me that I need to try.  I have been using velcro based belt loops on my compact camera cases since the mid-1990's.  I am not a particularly careful (nor particularly graceful), and even so, I have not lost a camera ever.  I have not even had a velcro attached case break loose and fall to the ground.

I really think that worrying over a velcro belt loop being insecure is overdoing it.  You, of course, should go with the case that makes you feel best, but now you know my opinion.

Good luck,

-barry

I haven't yet, but the delicate blades in the front make me nervous. I might order that Kaiser 58 mm push on lens cap. Oh, wait, are you talking about the rear screen? Do you think it needs protecting?

@vintagebob--thanks for the pictures. I went ahead and ordered the 5690 today (the blue add-on at Amazon). Even though you mention it is snug, it sounded worth trying since I prefer the plastic clip to just velcro for a front closure; and I never use the belt buckle loop, preferring to rely on the waist strap.

Yes, i was referring to the rear screen. I've seen my friend getting his screen scratched with long use. Not so sure, but just a thought of getting one.
Now that you've mentioned the lens protector i'm thinking about how useful would it be; i mean when you are not using it, the camera would be in a strong case. Then what's the point of getting one?

I think that the point is that if there is a sharp impact on your mostly cloth case (say, if you fell against the corner of a table or if a runaway cart ran into you), then the lens cap might protect the blades.

There was a suggestion that a rigid plastic card in the front pocket might serve the same function.

I'm still undecided on that one (removing the lens cap and putting it back on is one more annoyance that I currently don't live with with my s90).

On a different note: would you hand your G7XmII to a stranger to ask them to take a picture of your group (too big for a selfie)? I do that all the time with my s90 but it wasn't nearly as expensive or as heavy/delicate...
