KM 7D Battery

Hi! Have been away from this forum almost 10 years. My old KM7D and 5D are both still like new and working well. Both have had this "first frame black" issue but after few repairs they have been working well. Only issue is with my 7D is that it will run out of battery in 2-3 weeks even if I don't use it. But the battery life is normal if I start using it after charging the battery (it takes that x- hundred of frames until the battery is empty). Anyone knows whats the problem? On my KM5D the battery life is superb!

Re: KM 7D Battery

how old are the batteries, and are they OEM ? I had two original OEM batteries, they are 12 years old, I also had two generic , best I could find with a good review. One of my OEM originals still works after 12 years, bot original generics are dead. I recently bought another Good generic and my original OEM is still working.

I noticed the original generics  would die in the camera after 3 weeks,. The OEM lasted longer.  The New generic is in the camera right now and still holds it charge even after a few months. But it may be down a bit, but I can grab it ( close by ) and turn it on to capture a few shots if I want...

I hope this helps.

Re: KM 7D Battery

The battery is not the problem, I have many batteries and they work fine with 5D!

Re: KM 7D Battery

So what you are saying is you can put a fully charged battery in your 5D, be it a generic or an OEM, and let it sit unused and a year later it will still be fresh? BUT... a fresh battery in your 7D will only last a few weeks, if unused, But you can take a few hundred photos on a given day and it works fine..

I am only asking to clarify your issue.

So you think there is something wrong with your 7D because it wont hold a charge un molested for more then a few weeks,

I offered my experience with my batteries and they all seem to work under the parameters Imentioned. be it my 7D, or my A 700, or my other lithium ion camera batteries

Re: KM 7D Battery

If the batteries are fine in the 5d , just not the 7d , then it's clearly a fault with the camera .

One thing that can cause this is if the internal battery has failed . ( the one that stores the settings , date/time etc when the main battery is removed .

.

Or , something has gone on the main board .

.

The only solution for repair would be either replacing the internal battery , or if that didn't work , trying to figure out which board is at fault .

Trouble is , unless you are competent to replace your battery yourself , paying some one to do it isn't economically viable .

Likewise if it's a board fault , even if you get someone to look at it , new parts aren't available and a workshop are unlikely to be prepared to use salvaged parts as they can't offer a warrantee on the work .

.

So the likely only solution is to remove the battery after use until next needed .

Neil, he said both cameras work fine... both the 5D and the 7D.. the batteries " WORK " in both cameras.. His complaint is that in the 7d, the batteries lose their charge after sitting for  a few weeks. He seemed to elude to the fact that he can keep the battery in the 5 D for a year and turn it on and the camera will be as fresh as if it was just charged.

That has nothing to do with internal battery function. Every electronic device as some parasitic drain. apparently the 7D has more parasitic drain than the 5D. IN my opinion , having a 5 D and a 7D that actually work even after sitting for three weeks is wonderful.

Re: KM 7D Battery

Hard to say really .

I have a 7d that stays in the back room with the battery in and a lens attached , ready for action incase anything interesting happens in the back garden .

Also I heard that to fire a few shots off on a frequent regular basis helped hold back FFB and Anti-shake failure . Fact or fiction , I don't know . But I know my 7d is still working great by doing this.

More than can be said for my 5d !

.

Regarding battery life while not in use , with original Minolta batteries , quite old now , many months later still show a good charge .

I've never taken note of how long one lasts , but it's a good long time . Certainly a lot more than 3 weeks .
