Re: G1 X ii - excellent go-anywhere camera

The 3:2 & 1:1 formats are really a gimmick. The sensor is 4:3 native. The photodiodes are larger than a 4/3rds which is why it's so good in low light. Equal or better than the 18 mp aps-c in my Canon M.

I actually pay close attention to these things. Maybe next week I'll dig out some shots taken with my G1 original. Pretty decent. LOL

Not necessarily so.   3:2 is the native format of DSLR's and makes a better fit on the newer computer screens.  I use it all  the time, both for my DSLR's and my G1X-II.  So I don't think it is a gimmick at all.  For me it is what I use and is very nice.

Now I know that you primarily use a tablet, so for you 4:3 may be your preferred format and the G1X 4:3 your preferred format.  Fine and dandy.  But don't summarily dismiss what others prefer as simply a gimmick.

As I said earlier, both G1X's are fine cameras.  Enjoy what you have.  Some of us just prefer the tradeoffs made in the G1X-II.  And that is fine too.

kind regards

Actually my desktop is 1920:1200. I just use a phone for comments.

Panasonic was the first to implement the multi format option. But the sensor at its maximum resolution is 4:3 on the G1X (both). That was my point.

The twin control rings around the lens are a great idea but they can be very laggy in use. I've set one of mine to alter the focal length, the idea being that it should be quicker to select a particular focal length than using the zoom control around the shutter button. It works, sort of, and it's useful being able to go straight to a specific focal length such as 28mm, or 85mm, but sometimes it 'thinks' about it before responding.

I have the focal lengths assigned to the ring around the 4-way controller on the back, and that works excellently in my opinion, very snappy. This leaves the twin control rings on the lens available to change aperture and exposure compensation.

I haven't personally noticed significant lag when operating the twin control rings around the lens. I remember reading this is due to some camera setting - could it be switching to a single AF area or something like that?

Mark, If you assign 'step zoom' to the inner control ring on the lens barrel you need one click of the ring to activate zooming then one click for each preset focal length. The effect of this unnecessary first click is to give the impression of a delay to the zooming process. Presumably this is what loitokitok was referring to when he said the camera 'thinks' about responding to step zooming.

Perhaps this delay is less noticeable if step zoom is assigned to the rear control dial around the 4-way controller because the effort required to quickly turn the rear dial with a thumb is less.

For me, this is the most annoying design feature of a very versatile camera...

David,  mine doesn't work that way; the very first click on the ring changes the zoom setting.

Just to clarify (no edit functionality on this device), I meant the ring around the 4-way controller which is what I use for the step zoom.

I have the aperture value assigned to the inner ring around the lens, and that too responds to the very first click.

Very interesting, Mark. Thanks for that - I wonder if they changed the design during production. Wanna swap? It drives me crazy....  ;O)

Re: G1 X ii - excellent go-anywhere camera

I think I have mentioned it before, but I have a vague recollection of reading about the responsiveness of the rings being dependent on which focus mode is selected. I've only activated the central sensor (1-point AF). Do you have multiple AF points activated?

I use both focus modes and switch regularly between them - hadn't noticed any difference in that first click thing between them. Bizarrely, I have the camera with me here in the office and I've just checked... no difference in that redundant first click when turning the inner lens ring to step zoom. But I took the opportunity to set step zoom to the rear dial and, to my delight, no redundant first 'click' there. So I'll keep that setting, I think.

Now all I want is the option to switch the direction the ring needs to be turned to zoom in - intuitively, I always turn it the wrong way......

Thanks, Mark.
