Sorry for reviving a very old thread, but I just want to confirm something.

My understanding after reading through all of this this is that other than cosmetics, there is only one version of the Vario 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. Any version of the Vario 14-140mm with f/3.5-5.6 printed on the lens should perform the same.

Is this correct?

So in terms of glass, performance and functionality, there are only two versions in total: The older Vario 14-140mm f/4.0-5.8 version (doesn't perform as well and heavier), and the 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 version.

Does anyone know if all the above is correct?

There are 2 versions of the 3.5-5.6 lens. Version 2 is weather sealed and has a faster AF motor, version 1 is not sealed and has a slower motor. As far as I know they are optically the same.

I have V1 and am very happy with it. It's an incredibly versatile lens, particularly for travel.

Thank you very much !!   I was not aware.    I'm seeing some different prices for the 3.5-5.6 lens, and this might explain it.  Now I need to make a decision (price vs faster AF and weather).

My GX85 isn't weather sealed either, but....I'm starting to realize I need to treat the body and the lenses as two categories (in the long-run).

This grip works well with longer lenses on the Gx80/85.

At the moment you can get this lens new in 2 versions as per recent posts the WR version launched in July this year. This should be at premium over the previous f3.5 version. Some retailers will have old stock of the non WR version.

In a couple of years it will be very confusing if buying used lenses.

I agree with you.   It looks like H-FSA14140 is the newest version, and H-FS14140AK is the one prior.   And looks like there is a "II" in F3.5-5.6 II ASPH for the newest version.

I had noticed these things, but at that time thought the difference was just cosmetics.

Hello,

I've been looking at the m43 system recently, therefore I have zero experience regarding its lenses.

Looking into the Panasonic 14-140 f/3.5-5.6 lens, I found the following on amazon.com:

and

Are the 2 above the same lens?

Thanks.

These are the same lens, they are the second version of the 14-140. The first version was f/4.0-5.8.

There is an even newer version, the 14-140 f/3.5-5.6 II, which is an upgraded version that includes weather resistance.

This is the link for that lens:

Thanks, this looks like it would work well.   I first need to decide if it's worth an extra approximate $140 to get the newer version lens (and....the newer version would come from an authorized dealer, getting me the longer Panasonic warranty).  It seems like it would be a no-brainer to get the newer version, but yet it's not because of the $.

I shall go for the WR mk-II version if I buy a 2nd 14~140.

Reason:

  1. I have (you might buy) a WR body.
  2. Although the mk-I is DUAL IS & DUAL IS 2 compatible, and DUAL IS 2 is currently the most powerful stabilisation of Panny gear, not guarantee DUAL IS 3 might roll out later. If so, likely mk-II might have a firmware update. I doubt would mk-I catch up?

My 2 cents.

Thanks Albert.  That makes a lot of sense, and I believe that's what I'll do.  I do hope to someday have a WR body.

I'm also learning there are Vario 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 lenses being sold as New, that came out of kits.  I'm assuming those are the same physical design/performance as the pre-weather-resistant version.  If anyone knows differently, please chime in.    These have no warranty.  I don't know which cameras had this lens in the kit.   Apparently the term "white box" is sometimes used to describe "new" lenses being sold that came from a kit.
